Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to provide an overview and report some features of the graph, the selection of data is erratic and contains significant inaccuracies. For instance, the student states that in 1967, '1 metric tonnes by Portugal masses.4.1 and 8.2 metric tonnes CO2 was emitted Italy and Sweden', which misrepresents the actual data points from the chart. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat confused, and the progression of data across the years is difficult to follow. To reach a higher level, the response needs to select and accurately report the main trends and features of all four countries without factual errors, providing a clearer and more accurate summary of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The connection of ideas is frequently hindered by inadequate or mechanical cohesive devices, such as abrupt transitions like 'According to line graph' and 'Than after a two decades'. Referencing is also unclear in places, making it hard for the reader to follow the logical development of comparisons between the nations. To improve, the student should ensure that sentences and paragraphs flow logically from one to the next, using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to data reporting, such as 'emitted', 'gradually decreased', and 'gas emission', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'callibrated', 'carbon dioxide emissions were slightly rise', and 'Sweden suddenly down'. Spelling and word-form inaccuracies are also present, which occasionally causes some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their range of functional vocabulary and use less common lexical items with greater precision and correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex or passive constructions are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'most carbon dioxide emitted per person in United Kingdom.but least gas was emitted', 'CO2 emissions by per person was gradually decreased', and punctuation fragmentation. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of error-free sentence structures and exercise better control over basic grammatical rules, tenses, and punctuation.
