Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a summary of the data with several inaccuracies and underdeveloped points. While an overview is attempted, it contains contradictory statements, such as claiming Sweden followed an upward trend while the graph shows an overall decline from its 1977 peak, and incorrectly stating that the UK showed a downward trend throughout. Data points are frequently misread or described vaguely, such as "stopped at almost on 9 metric tonnes in 2007" for the UK (actual value 8.7) and "wandred from 4-8 mettric tonnes" for Italy. Key comparisons between countries are missing or obscured by unclear phrasing. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately report the main trends and figures from the chart, avoid generalisations that contradict the visual data, and provide a clearer, more precise overview of the key features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation, but the response lacks a clear overall progression and logical flow. While paragraphing is attempted, the transitions between sentences and ideas feel mechanical and awkward, such as "To fleeting glance with" and "Moving ahead". Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to determine whether the writer is referring to a specific country's data or a timeframe (e.g., "that was hit to the average of portugal"). Cohesive devices are used inadequately and sometimes inaccurately. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must ensure that sentences follow a logical sequence, use standard and appropriate cohesive phrases instead of awkward translations, and maintain clear pronoun and noun referencing throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical issues include misspelt words ("emmission", "decads", "steadly", "crystle"), awkward phrasing ("average of per person", "average of sweden individuals"), and incorrect word forms ("mettric tonnes"). The range of vocabulary is narrow, heavily relying on repetitive terms. To progress to the next level, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire to include more precise vocabulary related to data trends, improve spelling accuracy, and use appropriate collocations when describing statistical changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns with frequent errors in complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical issues, including incorrect verb tenses and forms ("was stood at", "was suddenly declined", "was considerably grown up"), missing articles ("in united kingdom"), and faulty prepositions within grammatical structures. Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, as seen in the lowercase start to the second paragraph ("overall, it is crystle clear"). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should practice forming accurate passive and active verb structures, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
