Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially by attempting to summarise the main features of the line graph, but the selection of data is erratic and includes inaccurate interpretations. For instance, the student describes Portugal as 'the most popular' and claims that the UK was 'living the carbon dioxide', which misinterprets the visual data entirely. Additionally, the overview section contains heavily confused ideas, incorrectly stating that Portugal 'rose sharply and the most popular' while Sweden was 'least popular and decline'. While some key data points are mentioned, such as initial and final figures for certain countries, the overall development of ideas is limited, repetitive, and unclear. To move up, the writer needs to select truly relevant trends and present a factual, coherent overview without confusing statistical data with popularity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates some organisation with basic paragraphing and transitional phrases like 'To commence' and 'On the other hand', but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are frequently misused or awkward, leading to mechanical and disjointed links between sentences. For example, expressions like 'On account of, the one country which was not rising at zero percentage' fail to connect clauses logically and obscure the relationships between the data points. Referencing is also problematic, as pronouns are often unclear. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices are used accurately and that the information flows naturally in a logical sequence that guides the reader effortlessly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical range is very limited and inadequate for an academic task, heavily constrained by basic vocabulary and frequent word choice errors. The student repeatedly uses inappropriate vocabulary, such as describing countries or emissions as 'popular' rather than discussing levels, and misuses terms like 'deminished' and 'fastly'. There are also persistent issues with word forms, such as 'drametically' instead of 'dramatically'. These noticeable errors and awkward collocations cause strain and confusion for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to build a much wider and more precise repertoire of vocabulary related to data trends, such as verbs and adverbs describing change, and ensure correct word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple sentence patterns where attempts at complex structures are almost entirely faulty. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the portugal were initiate', 'the Italy was drametically fluctuate'), incorrect prepositions, and faulty tense usage. Punctuation is also problematic, with intrusive commas breaking up basic structures, such as in the opening sentence ('illustrates, the average'). These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty and misinterpretation for the reader. To progress, the writer must focus on mastering fundamental sentence structures, ensuring correct verb tenses and agreement, and reducing basic grammatical errors.
