IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given line graph illustrates the average carbon dioxide release per person in four different countries namely, United kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal during 1967 to 2007. The unit of carbon dioxide emission is represented in metric tonnes.

The level of carbon dioxide emission have substantially declined for United Kingdom and Sweden whereas a reverse trend of inclination is observed in countries like Italy and Portugal.

Overall, the average gas emission in United kingdowm have slightly declined from 11 metric tonnes in 1967 to less than 9 metric tonnes in 2007. Moreover, in Sweden, the rate of carbon dioxide release escalated drastically during the first decade followed by a steep decline until 2007 . Furthermore, Italy and Portugal showed nearly identical trend throughout the duration. Notably, the average carbon dioxide release in Italy and Portugal were around 4 metric tonnes and 1 metric tonnes respectively in 1967 which eventually reached around 8 metric tonnes and 5 metric tonnes respectively in 2007. Surprisingly, the rate of carbon emission in Sweden and Portugal reached to the same level in 2007, that was slightly above 5 metric tonnes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview of the trends and reporting the main features of carbon dioxide emissions across the four countries. Key data points, such as the initial and final figures for the UK, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal, are accurately cited from the visual data, and relevant comparisons are made, such as noting the intersecting levels for Sweden and Portugal in 2007. The progression of ideas is clear and supported throughout, which reflects the solid performance in this category, though some further extension of specific minor fluctuations could have enhanced the analysis slightly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout the information. Information and data are grouped reasonably well, and cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "whereas", "Moreover", and "Furthermore". However, the paragraphing structure is slightly unorthodox, as the initial overview appears isolated as a single sentence before the main body paragraphs, and the positioning of the summary paragraph is unconventional. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying trends and measurements with phrases like "substantially declined", "escalated drastically", and "nearly identical trend". The writer attempts less common lexical items, but there are some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies that reflect this band level, such as spelling errors in country names ("United kingdom", "United kingdowm") and slight awkwardness in phrasing like "average gas emission". These minor errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in spelling and collocation to achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("The level of carbon dioxide emission have") and missing or incorrect articles ("reached to the same level", "metric tonnes respectively"). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, with many sentences remaining grammatically sound. To progress further, the writer needs to eliminate minor structural slips and demonstrate more consistent control over complex grammatical patterns.
