Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the four countries and making relevant comparisons between the upward and downward trends. Key features, such as the starting points, peak years, and final figures, are selected and reported. However, some ideas are under-developed or less precise; for instance, the writer refers to the 'North Kingdom' instead of the United Kingdom and makes inaccuracies with specific data points, such as stating Portugal started at '0.1 tonne' instead of 1.2 tonnes and citing the final year as spanning from 1996 rather than 1967 to 2007. Despite these lapses in data reporting and minor mechanical errors, the main trends are adequately covered, positioning the task achievement at the targeted level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically, separating the decreasing countries from the increasing ones. Paragraphing is utilised to divide the introduction, overview, and body details, establishing a basic structure for the report. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. The use of transitional phrases such as 'Furthermore' and 'In addition' feels slightly forced, and referencing could be smoother. Pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrasing 'which in 1967 was 4 tonne and in 2007 was approximately 8 tonne', which slightly disrupts the natural flow and progression of ideas, keeping the organisational standard at this specific band level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to data reporting such as 'decreasing trend', 'upward trend', 'fluctuating', and 'surged'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('Sweaden') and awkward word choices or collocations, such as referring to emissions in a 'fluctuating way' instead of showing 'fluctuations'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some inaccuracy, and word forms are occasionally confused, as seen in 'ler' instead of 'per'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to this level, as greater precision and accuracy are required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at comparative structures and time clauses, such as 'while Italy and Portugal were the opposite of these countries and showed an upward trend over 40 year period.' There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present, including missing articles ('over 40 year period' instead of 'over a 40-year period'), preposition errors ('at 5 tonne' instead of 'to 5 tonnes'), and minor agreement issues. These errors occur throughout the text but rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning despite the lack of full grammatical control.
