IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph represents the Coutry wise data in which it shows about the Carbon Diioxide emission. According to graph it shows that 1967 there was highest carbon dioxide emissoon per metrics tonnes in Unitef Kingdom. The 1977 data tell that Sweden per metric tonnes emissions increase as compare to 1967 data. If we looks onto 1987 data we readily said that Sweden improves there number while italy and Portugal emissions rate have been increased. In 1997 United Kingdom was able to conrol there pollution of carbon dioxide. In the last if we look most recent data of 2007 United Kingdom and Sweden carbon dioxide emissions decreases while Italy and Portugal carbon emissions increases. Overall the United Kingdom and Sweden realizes the devarstating effects of carbon dioxide gas in enviroment and taken control on there emissions. Portugal and Italy they must needs preventions measures to overcome the ongoing carbon dioxide gas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, which aligns with a lower band outcome. While the student attempts to summarise the information by mentioning the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal across several years, the selection of main features lacks clarity and focus. Key data points are occasionally inaccurate, and the description relies heavily on fragmented, sequential observations rather than a cohesive overview of trends. Furthermore, the final sentences drift into subjective commentary and recommendations rather than sticking strictly to summarising the visual data. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to provide a clear, distinct overview of the main trends at the beginning or end, select the most significant data points accurately, and maintain an objective, data-focused tone without offering personal advice.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response displays some basic organisation, but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure guiding the reader through the data. Sentences are strung together using repetitive and sometimes mechanical linking expressions, such as 'According to graph it shows that' and 'If we looks onto 1987 data'. Paragraphing is also inadequate, as the entire response is clumped into a single block of text rather than being divided into an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which country or data point is being discussed. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should adopt a standard four-paragraph structure, use a wider and more accurate variety of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly, and ensure that each paragraph has a distinct thematic focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource used in this response is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'carbon dioxide emission', 'metric tonnes', and 'pollution', but these terms are often accompanied by noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and collocation, such as 'Coutry', 'Diioxide', 'emissoon', 'Unitef', and 'devarstating'. Basic vocabulary is frequently repeated, and attempts at less common words result in awkward phrasing that occasionally causes difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, practice correct word forms and spellings for key terms, and learn standard collocations related to describing statistical trends and environmental data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of basic sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text, such as 'there was highest carbon dioxide emissoon', 'Sweden per metric tonnes emissions increase', 'Sweden improves there number', and 'they must needs preventions measures'. Punctuation is also basic and occasionally intrusive. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and impede fluent communication. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure consistent and accurate use of past and present tenses when describing data over time, and eliminate persistent errors in pronoun referencing and pluralisation.
