Student answer (Band 5.0)
This line graph illustrates the average carbon dioxide emmision (in tonnes) for each individual. it contains four countries which include United Kingdom, Swedan,Italy and Portugal in year between 1967 and 2007.
The graph summarize that the highest carbon dioxide produced by United Kingdom and Swedan on average whereas the lowest carbon dioxide release by Portugal and italy remain at middle of graph.
At the start of graph, the countries like United kingdom and Swedan relased a higher amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) which is 10.5 and 8.5 metric tonnes respectively in year 1967. Furthermore, there was a dramatic increase shown in 1977 in Swedan upto 10 metric tonnes and the (CO2) emisssion was also hightened in italy in this year. In 1997, a significant increase in (CO2) relased in protugal and remain same till 2007.
In 1987, there was slightl decline shown in United kingdom, a major drop seen in swedan and overlap Italy (around 7 tonnes).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising carbon dioxide emissions across four countries, but it only partially covers the data. While it notes general trends and mentions some figures, such as for the United Kingdom and Sweden in 1967, it misses key comparative details and misreads several trends shown in the graph. For instance, the text claims there was a significant decrease in emissions in all four countries by 2007, which is inaccurate for Italy and Portugal, where emissions actually rose or remained relatively high. The overview is weak, consisting of imprecise generalisations rather than a clear summary of overall trends. Ideas are limited and under-developed, keeping the task achievement at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates some overall organisation by attempting to group information chronologically and by country, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is rudimentary, and sentences are often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as abrupt shifts using phrases like At the start of graph and At the later part of graph. Referencing and logical transitions between ideas are frequently faulty, making it difficult to follow the relationships between data points. While it is coherent enough to be understood overall, the mechanical and inadequate use of cohesion keeps the response at this band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including emmision, Swedan, relased, hightened, emisssion, and protugal, alongside word choice issues like carbon dioxide produced instead of emitted. The range of vocabulary is basic, and attempts at less common phrasing lead to awkward expressions and repetition. These lexical errors and limitations cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as in the opening sentence where clauses are awkwardly linked. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including missing articles (in year between 1967), incorrect prepositions (in year 1967, at the start of graph), subject-verb agreement issues (Portugal and italy remain), and punctuation omissions. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, which aligns with this specific band descriptor.
