Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph, making relevant comparisons across the four countries. The overview successfully captures the main trends, noting that Italy and Portugal saw upward trajectories while the UK and Sweden experienced declines. However, some parts of the task are handled more fully than others; for example, the specific details regarding intermediate fluctuations and exact endpoint figures contain minor inaccuracies compared to the visual data. The ideas are relevant and generally clear, though certain descriptions lack full extension and precision, placing the response solidly in the middle band for this criterion. To reach higher bands, the student should ensure all data points are accurately transcribed and thoroughly supported with precise comparative language.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organisation, dividing the information into an introduction with an overview, followed by two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to structure the text, such as 'to commence with', 'however', and 'on the other hand'. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in the awkward transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is present and helps navigate the text, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. To achieve a higher level of coherence and cohesion, the student should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive links and ensure that referencing is consistently precise throughout the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'comparative data', 'significantly surged', and 'dramatically collapsed'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including word form and word choice issues such as 'it was steadily grown' instead of 'steadily grew', 'surgedat', and 'dramitically'. Spelling errors like 'dramitically' and 'rised' also occur. While these inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To progress to a higher band, the student needs to expand their control of less common lexical items, improve collocation awareness, and eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and verb forms, particularly with passive voice misuse ('it was decline', 'it was steadily grown', 'it was significantly rised') and tense consistency. Punctuation is also occasionally weak. These frequent errors in basic structures and verb patterns can cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited grammatical range with persistent inaccuracies. To improve, the student must focus on active versus passive voice construction, accurate past tense formation for dynamic trends, and ensuring that complex sentence attempts are grammatically sound.
