Student answer (Band 6.0)
The present line graph compares the average carbon emmissions per person in the following four countries; United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Overall, United kingdom and Sweden have shown a decrease in CO2 emissions while the emissions in Portufgal and Italy are on the rise by 2007.
United Kingdom has shown major decrease in emissions dropping from an avarage of above 10 metric tonnes in 1967 to a steady drop to below ten by early 1990's and the figures in 2007 show that the emissions are on a decrease.
Similarly, Sweden is now rapidly decreasing emissions, with average being below 6 metric tonnes per person by 2007. However the period between 1967 to 1977 shows a sharp increase in emission.
Conversely, Italy demonstrates constant increase in C2 emissions. the average emissions has increased from just above 4 metric tonnes per person in 1967 to just below 8 metric tonnes per person by the year 2007.
Portugal, shows similar trends. The average emissions per person in Portugal in 1967 was below 2 metric tonnes. However, this number has shown constant increase, reaching just below six metric tonnes per person in 1997 and stablising below 6 metric tonnes per person till 2007.
In conclusion, United Kingdom and Sweden have shown decrease in emissions by 2007, while Itlay and Portugal have.demonstrated an increase. United Kingdom remins the highest Average CO2 emission nation in the four contries by 2007, While Sweden and Portugal share the lowest spot

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and selecting the main trends for all four countries shown in the graph. The overall progression is clearly captured, noting that the UK and Sweden experienced decreases while Italy and Portugal saw increases. However, the response sits at this level because some ideas and data points are slightly under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the student states that the UK experienced a drop below ten by the early 1990s, but overlooks some specific trajectory details. Similarly, while comparisons are made, they could be extended further to fully demonstrate the higher band characteristics of well-developed support throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with the introduction followed by an overview paragraph, body paragraphs dedicated to pairs of countries with similar trends, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Similarly', 'Conversely', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, creating a coherent overall arrangement. To push into higher bands, referencing and cohesion within paragraphs could be slightly smoother, avoiding minor mechanical feel in sentence transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to trends such as 'decrease', 'sharp increase', 'constant increase', and 'stablising'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'emmissions', 'Portufgal', 'avarage', 'remins', 'contries', and 'Itlay'. While these minor slips do not impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of precision in spelling and occasional awkward collocations that keep the lexical resource at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses and comparative constructions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in 1967', 'highest Average CO2 emission nation'), punctuation flaws (like the stray period in 'Itlay and Portugal have.demonstrated'), and minor subject-verb agreement or preposition issues. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning easily.
