IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The average carbon dioxide emissions per head i the UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007 is depicted by the given line chart.
Overall, the prima faie glance makes it quite clear that emissions by Portugal and Italy had constantly increased vis-a-vis Uk which showed an decrease in amount of emissions. Sweden witnessed a plunge after 1977 in carbon emissions.
Scrutinizing deeper into the obtainable information, emission by Uk was at a pinnacle of around 10.5 metric tonnes in 1967 which declined steadily to approximately 8.3 unit tonnes. Emissions by Portugal in 1967 were just below 2 metric tonnes which boosted and reached just above 5 metric tonnes by the year 2007.
Concatenating further, the emissions by Sweden were just above 8 metric tonnes in 1967 which increased by around 2 unit tonnes in the following decade before plunging down to just above 5 tonnes in 2007. THe emissions by Italy started the graph at around 4 metric tonnes and showing a steady increase reached to just below 8 tonnes in 2007. Emissions by Uk and portugal were identical at around 5 metric tonnes in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall patterns: UK emissions declined, Sweden fell after its 1977 peak, and Italy and Portugal rose. You also include relevant comparisons, such as the UK and Portugal ending at roughly similar levels. Most figures and directions are broadly consistent with the chart. However, the overview says Italy and Portugal “constantly increased,” although Italy levelled off between 1997 and 2007, and the final comparison is inaccurate: Italy, not the UK, was close to Portugal at about 7.6 and 5.4 tonnes respectively? In fact, the UK ended at about 8.7, while Portugal and Sweden were both around 5.4. Some details are also imprecise, particularly the UK’s starting and ending values. Make the overview more exact and distinguish the countries’ final positions clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the figures. The information generally progresses from broad trends to country-specific details, and comparisons help connect the data. However, transitions such as “Scrutinizing deeper into the obtainable information” and “Concatenating further” sound mechanical and do not clearly signal how the next paragraph relates to the previous one. The final sentence also repeats a comparison already made in the Portugal paragraph, while grouping the countries by trend or by starting/ending level could make the progression more purposeful. Use straightforward links such as “Regarding the remaining countries” and ensure each paragraph has a distinct focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “declined steadily,” “increased,” and “plunging down,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but several are inaccurate or unnatural in this context: “prima faie glance,” “vis-a-vis,” “obtainable information,” and “Concatenating further.” “Boosted” is not a natural way to describe a rise in emissions, and “unit tonnes” is an incorrect or confusing measurement phrase. Spelling and capitalisation slips, including “THe” and inconsistent “Uk,” also reduce control. Prefer precise, conventional chart language and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the trends remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, however. In the introduction, “emissions … is depicted” has a subject–verb agreement problem; use “emissions … are depicted” or “the average … is depicted.” The overview has “an decrease,” which should be “a decrease,” and “which showed an decrease in amount” is awkwardly constructed. In “Italy started the graph at around 4 metric tonnes and showing a steady increase reached…,” the verb forms do not form a clear parallel structure. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices. Build accuracy by checking agreement, articles, and parallel verb forms, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
