Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the four countries and report the broad direction of change for each: Portugal and Italy rise, while Sweden and the UK fall overall. These are relevant main features. However, the overview is not clearly stated, and some comparisons are inaccurate or confusing. Sweden did not fall from 8 to 5 tonnes overall: it began at about 8.6, peaked at roughly 10.3 in 1977, then declined to 5.4. The final claim that Sweden is the “best country” is not an appropriate comparison and repeats the decline without explaining the peak. Italy’s rise to about 7.6 is also understated as “7.” Select the key trends accurately and compare the countries’ starting and ending positions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the graph, discusses each country in turn, and ends with a comparison. Phrases such as “first of all” and “the second main feature” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the ideas are presented as one long, loosely connected block, with repeated “and” links and no clear paragraphing or concise overview. The final comparison is difficult to follow because “this three country” does not identify which countries are being compared, and the point about Sweden repeats earlier information. Group the trends into paragraphs, use clear comparisons between rising and falling countries, and make each sentence contribute a distinct point.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “carbon dioxide emissions,” “main features,” and “increased,” so the subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with “carbon dioxide” and “tones” repeated frequently. Several word choices or spellings make the meaning less clear, including “bar graph” for a line graph, “most downfall,” “slow down,” and “best country.” Country names are also misspelled or inconsistently capitalised, such as “swiden,” “Potugal,” and “united kingdom.” Use accurate chart language and vary expressions for trends, for example “rose,” “declined,” “reached a peak,” and “per person.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response mainly uses simple sentence patterns, often beginning with “it is” or joining clauses with “and.” There is an attempt to express time periods and comparisons, but frequent errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms make several statements awkward or unclear. For example, “it is increased from 1 to 5” uses an incorrect verb form, while “it is most downfall” lacks a workable grammatical structure. Articles and prepositions are also problematic in phrases such as “in the Portugal” and “in the Italy,” and punctuation is largely absent. Practise forming clear past-tense sentences, such as “Portugal’s emissions rose from about 1 to 5.4 tonnes per person,” and separate each main point with appropriate punctuation.
