The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given line graph illustrates how average carbon dioxide emmisions per individuals has been produced in four major countries from 1967 to 2007. It shows a average CO2 produced by individuals in four countries.
Overall, the most noticable feature was seen in Sweden because this country was at top position at begining but after it followed a gradually decreasing trend. The Portugal was slightly following increasing trend till the end. On the other hand, as we can see Co2 emmission was introduced in metric tonnes.
In the year 1967, the United Kingdom was at the top of chart that emmission per person was recorded bewteen 10 to 12whereas the portugal played as a small producing country in the beginning. However, it is clearly seen that Sweden was increasing at first but after reaching it's peak in the year 1977, then it dramatically dicreased till the 2007 where two countries were parallel to eachother.
The Italy was following upward trend with some fluctuations over the year. And Portugal was increasing gradually till the year 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad period and mention several relevant patterns, including Sweden’s rise to a peak in 1977 followed by decline, and the increases in Italy and Portugal. However, the overview is incomplete and includes a misleading statement: the UK, not Sweden, had the highest emissions in 1967, and the UK remained highest in 2007. The claim that two countries were “parallel” at the end is unclear; Sweden and Portugal finished at roughly the same level, while Italy was higher. The response also gives few precise comparisons or figures, and the comment that emissions were “introduced in metric tonnes” does not describe a trend. Select the main overall patterns accurately, then support them with key values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and uses some linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “On the other hand.” Nevertheless, progression is not consistently clear: the overview says Sweden was initially at the top, while the later paragraph correctly places the UK at the top, creating a contradiction. Some links are also awkward or do not show a meaningful relationship, as in “On the other hand” before the unit statement. The final paragraph repeats the upward trends already mentioned without adding comparisons. Organise the body by contrasting the declining series with the rising ones, and use references and connectors only where their relationship is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “gradually decreasing trend,” “peak,” “upward trend,” and “metric tonnes,” so the reader can generally identify the topic and direction of change. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “emissions … has been produced,” “small producing country,” and “emmission was introduced.” Spelling errors are also noticeable, including “emmisions,” “noticable,” and “dicreased.” These issues make parts of the description difficult to interpret precisely. Build a reliable set of terms for describing data—such as “emissions per person,” “stood at,” “rose,” and “fell”—and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a time clause about Sweden reaching its peak and a contrast introduced by “However.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation sometimes make the meaning hard to follow. For example, “how average carbon dioxide … has been produced” has an unsuitable verb construction, while “The Italy was following upward trend” has article and sentence-pattern problems. The sentence beginning “In the year 1967” also becomes difficult to parse, and “then … then” disrupts its structure. Practise clear comparison patterns such as “The UK’s figure fell from X to Y, whereas Italy’s rose,” and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
