Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line gragh illustrates the average of cardon dioxide emissions per person in United Kingdom, Sweden, Itlay and Protugal from year 1967 to 2007.Overall the data shows significant fluctuations, the data reveals a gradual rise in Protugal and Italy over a decade which started from the year 1967 to 1997. On the other hand, Sweden depicts a steep rise in 1976 then a dramatic fall and likewise United kingdom also had shown fall with no such sharp peaks from 1967 to 2007. In 1967 the highest emission of carbon dioxide per person was seen in United Kindgom approximately 11 % then Sweden at 9% and the lowest range country list was Italy about 4.5 percent and Portugal 1.5% approximately. By 2007 United states had the highest percentage of emissions with nearly 9.5%. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the four countries and the overall contrast between rising emissions in Portugal and Italy and falling emissions in the UK and Sweden. You also compare the starting and ending positions. However, the overview is not fully accurate: Italy rises through 1997 but then remains level to 2007, and Sweden peaks in 1977, not 1976. The final comparison contains a major factual error: the UK, not the United States, has the highest figure in 2007, at about 8.7 tonnes; Italy is around 7.6, while Sweden and Portugal are both about 5.4. The response therefore selects some relevant features but reports key details inaccurately and leaves the main trends underdeveloped. Use tonnes rather than percentages and check each comparison against the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an attempted overview, and comparisons of the beginning and end of the period. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “By 2007” help signal these stages. However, the ideas are crowded into one paragraph, and the progression is difficult to follow because the overview and detailed comparisons run together. Some links are also unclear: “and likewise” does not precisely explain the relationship between the UK and Sweden, while “In the Itlay” interrupts the final comparison. Organise the answer into clear paragraphs—introduction, overview, and two detail sections—and use direct comparisons to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “emissions,” “gradual rise,” “steep rise,” and “dramatic fall,” so the reader can identify the general subject and trends. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Percentage” and the symbol “%” are inappropriate for figures measured in metric tonnes, and “highest percentage of emissions” obscures what is being compared. “Lowest range country list” is also unclear, while repeated use of “data” and “rise” limits precision. Spelling errors such as “gragh,” “cardon,” “Itlay,” and “Protugal” further reduce control. Use precise trend language and the unit “tonnes per person,” and check country names and common chart vocabulary carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “On the other hand” and a time clause beginning “which started from the year 1967 to 1997.” Some basic meaning is understandable, but sentence control is inconsistent. The opening has no space after the full stop, and “In the Itlay” shows problems with article and sentence construction. In “Sweden depicts a steep rise in 1976 then a dramatic fall,” the second event lacks a clear grammatical link, while “United kingdom also had shown fall” has awkward tense and missing article use. Several long sentences combine multiple comparisons without clear punctuation. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then add controlled clauses with accurate articles, verb forms, and punctuation.
