Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad direction of several series: UK emissions decline, while Italy and Portugal rise, and you attempt to compare their starting and ending levels. However, the overview is incomplete and sometimes inaccurate. Sweden did not merely fluctuate slightly: it rose to a peak in 1977 and then fell substantially. Your account also says Italy reached “around 8” and Portugal “6,” which are rough approximations, but the chart shows Italy levelling off at about 7.6 and Portugal ending near 5.4. The UK and Sweden figures are also confused in the final paragraph, including the claim that Sweden was at 10 in 1997. Select the main trends accurately and give a clear overview before supporting it with comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has paragraph breaks and a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an overview, and then details about the countries. This gives it some organisation, but the progression is difficult to follow because several ideas are crowded into long sentences and comparisons shift abruptly. For example, the third paragraph moves from Italy to Portugal without clear sentence boundaries, while the final paragraph combines the UK and Sweden and ends with an unclear reference to “it.” Linking words such as “although,” “while,” and “however” are used repeatedly, sometimes where the relationship between ideas is not clear. Use one paragraph for the overview and separate detail paragraphs, grouping countries by trend, with shorter sentences and clearer references.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “emissions,” “per person,” “increase,” “decrease,” and “period,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the description unclear, such as “a slightly flucution,” “it was 9 proportion,” and “start with the 4 percent.” There are also frequent spelling errors, including “avarage,” “carbom,” “beggining,” and “Unites,” which reduce precision. For this graph, use standard collocations such as “emissions per capita,” “rose to,” “fell to,” and “remained stable.” Check spelling and choose metric tonnes rather than percentages when reporting the figures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, using contrast clauses with “while,” “although,” and “however.” However, these structures are often faulty, and frequent errors make relationships and time references difficult to understand. Examples include “the portugal significant increase,” “United kingdom had decrease,” and “at the 1997 it was 10 percent”; these show problems with articles, verb forms, and prepositions. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable, as in “Although at the last stage of the period it had 6 percent arround in the throughout figure.” Practise forming accurate past-tense sentences with a subject and verb, for example, “Portugal’s emissions rose from about 1.2 tonnes in 1967 to 5.4 tonnes in 2007.”
