Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the topic and mention all four countries, with some broad trends that match the graph: Portugal and Italy rise, while the UK and Sweden fall overall. However, the response reports few precise comparisons, and some descriptions are unclear or inaccurate. For example, Italy rises from about 4 to 7.6 tonnes, not merely to “above the 6,” and Sweden ends at about 5.4, rather than “at 6.” The claim that Sweden is the “best country” is not an appropriate summary of emissions data. The response is also 139 words, below the required 150; 11 words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count. Add a clear overview and select key figures to support it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response follows a basic country-by-country sequence, and phrases such as “in 1967” and “then 2007” show an attempt to compare the start and end of the period. However, the ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the progression is difficult to follow because several countries and explanations are joined in long, loosely connected sentences. The repeated pattern of introducing a country does not create a clear overview or group related trends. Some links, such as “the last is a united kingdom,” are awkward, while “because” introduces an explanation that is not relevant to the graph. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and focused detail paragraphs, using clear links between comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use relevant basic terms, including “CO2 emissions,” “metric,” “increase,” and “down,” so the reader can recognise the subject and some trends. However, vocabulary is repetitive and often imprecise, which makes several points difficult to understand. Phrases such as “disincrease,” “fresh and developed century,” and “do lot of work in the do fresh inviroment” are not appropriate or clear descriptions of the data; spelling errors such as “protugal” and “swedeen” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use standard trend language and collocations, for example “declined,” “rose steadily,” and “emissions per person.” Avoid adding unsupported explanations about environmental work, and focus on describing the figures and comparisons.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts simple comparisons across time, but sentence structures are very limited and errors occur frequently, sometimes making relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “in 1967 italy was 4 then 2007 it was above the 6” lacks a clear grammatical link between the two dates, while “this the he was increase too much” does not form a complete, understandable clause. There are also problems with articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, as in “the graph show” and the long run-on sentence about the UK. Use complete sentences with a consistent past-tense reporting pattern, such as “Italy’s emissions rose from about 4 tonnes in 1967 to 7.6 tonnes in 2007.” Check subject–verb agreement and punctuation.
