Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the four countries and give a broad overview of the main directions: the UK and Sweden generally declined, while Italy and Portugal rose. This is relevant to the graph, but the response reports no specific figures or detailed comparisons, and the claim that the UK and Sweden both “dropped significantly” overlooks the UK’s comparatively gradual fall. The ending also says the countries converged near the same level in 2007, which is only partly accurate: Italy and Portugal were close, while Sweden was lower and the UK remained highest. The response is 82 words, below the required 150, so the task is addressed only minimally. Add key values and turning points to support the overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic two-part structure, with an introduction followed by an overview, and the contrast between declining and rising countries gives the reader a starting point for understanding the graph. However, there is no further paragraph or progression into supporting details, so the ideas remain very limited. Linking is also sparse: “whereas” and “while” signal contrast, but the relationship between the final claim about convergence and the preceding trends is not clearly developed. The labels “Introduction;” and “Overview:” are unnecessary in a formal report. Organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview, and one or two detail paragraphs, grouping countries by trend and using clear comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt some task-appropriate vocabulary, including “emissions,” “trajectly” (apparently intended as “trajectory”), “steady increase,” and “convering near the same level.” The range is limited, however, and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to interpret, such as “Brodely,” “revirce,” “exsperienced,” and “hoe.” Some phrasing is also unnatural: “fluctuations in … emissions per year” does not clearly describe the graph’s overall trends, and “convering near the same level” is imprecise. Use accurate trend language such as “declined gradually,” “rose steadily,” and “ended at similar levels.” Check spelling carefully and choose collocations that describe the data precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to form a complex contrast in “while … dropped …, … experienced steady increase,” showing some awareness of how to combine ideas. However, the response relies on a small number of sentence patterns, and errors in sentence construction and punctuation frequently interrupt the reading. For example, the opening is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, and the final overview sentence lacks clear punctuation and has an incomplete structure around “while emission … dropped.” Capitalisation is inconsistent, and commas are missing between country names and clauses. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use full stops to separate the introduction from the overview. Proofread articles, plurals, and punctuation before submitting.
