IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph given below shows average carbon dioxide CO2 emissions per person in the United kingdom, sweden, Itly and portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Overall it is evident that portugal had the lowest carbon dioxide emission per person which eventually had slight increment and UK had the highest amount of carbon dioxide emission per person which eventually slightly reduced over the years.

On a closer observation, it can be seen that during 1967 emission of carbon dioxide in portugal was about 2 tonnnes which was the lowset when compaired with other countries. eventually the amount of emission in CO2 increased in portugal to 4 to 4.5 tonnes during 2007. However it is also evident that Sweden had a rapid increasing and decreasing in CO2 emission in metric tonnes. it peacked is emission during 1987 with 10.2 matric tonnes.

Furthermore it can be seen that UK had the highest emission during 1967 and 1977 with 10 to 10.5 matric tonns which is simillar to the average of sweden during 1977.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad pattern that the UK was highest and Portugal lowest at the beginning, and you attempt an overview of their opposing trends. However, the report only partially covers the graph: Italy is not discussed, and the final UK and Portugal figures are inaccurate. Portugal rose from about 1.2 tonnes in 1967 to around 5.4 in 2007, rather than starting at 2 and ending at 4–4.5. Sweden peaked in 1977 at about 10.3 tonnes, not in 1987; its 1987 figure was about 7. The UK figures are also understated. Select the main trends for all four countries and support them with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Furthermore” signal some organisation. However, the progression is incomplete: the final paragraph returns to the UK without covering Italy, while the Sweden detail is placed in the middle of the Portugal discussion. Several links are mechanical or unclear, including repeated “it can be seen” and “However” where the relationship between ideas is not clear. Organise the body by grouping related trends—for example, the declining UK and Sweden figures, then the rising Italy and Portugal figures—and use references and transitions that make those comparisons explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “metric tonnes,” “increased” and “reduced,” so the reader can generally understand the subject. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “had a rapid increasing and decreasing” and “peacked is emission.” Spelling errors—including “lowset,” “compaired,” “matric” and “simillar”—also make the writing less clear and polished. Use precise trend language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe a figure as “peaking at” a value and a trend as “fluctuating” or “rising steadily.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and use basic past-tense forms to describe historical data, but the range of sentence structures is limited and errors occur frequently. For example, “Sweden had a rapid increasing and decreasing” has a faulty verb pattern, while “it peacked is emission” lacks a correct possessive structure. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices, and the opening sentence is awkwardly constructed. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and simpler complex clauses, such as “Sweden’s emissions peaked in 1977 before falling.” Check sentence boundaries and possessives so that longer sentences remain easy to follow.
