Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given Line graph depicts average carbon dioxide emissions done by each person in four different countries, United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal Over the period from 1967 to 2007, which shows the timespan of 40 years, measured in metric tonnes.
Overall, It is evident that, Countries like Italy and Portugal showed a major incline while other two has reduced there emission levels during given timeline.
In 1967, Rate of emissions were almost 1 for Portugal, Which then marginally surged to around 5, before remaining steady. Meanwhile, UK measured a decline in emissions in following years. It started with approximately 11 metric tonns, Which is highest comapares to all others in 1967, Then it started reducing after 10 years and went down and ended up with 9. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the overall contrast accurately: emissions rose in Italy and Portugal, while the UK and Sweden declined over the period. You also include relevant figures and comparisons, such as the UK having the highest starting level and Sweden peaking in 1977. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise. Portugal rose from about 1 to just over 5, but it did not remain steady throughout; its increase continued across the period. The UK ended at about 8.7 rather than 9, and Italy’s rise from roughly 4 to 7.6 is not fully traced. Develop the overview and report the main turning points more precisely, including that Italy overtook Sweden and Portugal finished level with Sweden.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph describing the figures. The sequence generally follows the years, and linking expressions such as “Meanwhile,” “Moreover” and “Whereas” help signal comparisons. However, the final paragraph places several countries and trends into one long sequence, making some comparisons difficult to follow. “Moreover, 9 in 1967 for Sweden” is especially unclear because the subject and relationship to the preceding UK information are not explicit. Use separate, logically grouped sentences—for example, discuss the two declining countries together and then the two rising countries—and make references to each country clear. This would make the progression less mechanical and easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “metric tonnes,” “decline,” “surged” and “remained stable,” so the main trends are understandable. However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing a graph: emissions are described as “done by each person,” and “major incline” is not the usual expression for a rise. There are also spelling errors, including “tonns,” “comapares” and “untill,” alongside inconsistent capitalisation. Aim for accurate collocations such as “per-person emissions,” “rose substantially” and “was higher than.” Check spelling carefully and choose verbs that distinguish a gradual increase from a sharp one; this will make the account more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “while,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “other two has reduced there emission levels” should use a plural verb and possessive form, while “Countries like Italy and Portugal” does not need a capital letter mid-sentence. The opening sentence is also overloaded, with several pieces of information joined without clear punctuation. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles and comma placement. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response without sacrificing the comparisons you are trying to make.
