IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph represents average carbon dioxide emission per person in the UK, Sweden, Itlyand Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

It is evident that carbon dioxide emission per person was initially very lower in Portugal and Italy (around 1 metric tonnes and 4 metric tonnes respectively) comparred to Sweden and the United Kingdom ( 9 metric tonnes nad 11 metric tonnes respectively). In case of Portugal and Italy the carbon dioxide emission increased but in contrast, for the UK and Sweden opossite thing happened.

In 1967, the carbon dioxide emission per person in Portugal, Italy, Sweden and the United Kingdom was around 1 metric tonnes, 4 metric tonnes, 9 metric tonnes and 11 metric tonnes respectively. In portugal, carbon dioxide emission continued to rise till 1997, after that it remained neraly unchanged untill 2007. Similar phenomena happend in Italy, from1967 to 1997 carbon dioxide emission continued raising then it became constant from the year 1997 to 2007. In case of Sweden, though emission incresed between the year 1967 to 1977, it gradually decreased from then on till 2007. However, in the UK the carbon dioxide emission decreased over the years from 1967 to 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall contrast: emissions rose in Portugal and Italy, while they fell in the UK and, after an early rise, Sweden. The opening comparison and the country-by-country account are relevant, and most reported starting levels and trends match the graph. The response also notes that Portugal and Italy levelled off by 2007. To make the overview more complete and precise, highlight that the UK remained the highest emitter throughout, while Portugal rose to equal Sweden at about 5.4 tonnes in 2007. Some details are less fully reported: Italy’s rise continued to 1997, then stabilised, and Sweden’s peak in 1977 is not quantified. These omissions limit how fully the key comparisons are developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview of the contrasting trends, and a paragraph describing the countries in more detail. Linking expressions such as “In contrast,” “However,” and “from then on” help show relationships between changes, and the reader can follow the account. Some cohesion is mechanical, however, because “In case of” is repeated and several sentences begin with country names followed by the same pattern. The overview and detail paragraph also repeat the 1967 figures. For stronger progression, keep the overview focused on the most important comparisons, then use the final paragraph to add changes and endpoints without restating the same starting values.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emission,” “metric tonnes,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “remained nearly unchanged,” so the main information is generally understandable. There is some attempt to vary descriptions of trends, but word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and reduce precision. Examples include “opossite thing happened,” “continued raising,” and “Similar phenomena,” which are either unnatural or imprecise in this context. Several misspellings, such as “Itlyand,” “comparred,” and “incresed,” also detract from control. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations for describing data, such as “emissions rose steadily” or “the figure levelled off,” and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple statements and more complex clauses, including the contrast in “though emission increased … it gradually decreased” and the time clause “after that it remained nearly unchanged.” Most meanings remain clear, and the response shows some control of past-tense reporting. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, plurals, and sentence construction: “1 metric tonnes” should be “1 metric tonne,” and “carbon dioxide emission” is often better expressed as “carbon dioxide emissions.” The opening overview sentence also has an awkward structure, while “from1967 to 1997” needs spacing and clearer punctuation. To improve, check singular/plural agreement and use consistent past-tense forms in each trend description.
