IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph presents the average amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted per individual from 1967 to 2007 in the countries of United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal.
Overall, people from Portugal and Italy showed a steady increase in the release of CO2 throughout the given period. On the other hand, carbon dioxide emissions from United Kingdom and Sweden generally displayed a decline between 1967 to 2007.
In 1967, United Kingdom released the most amount of carbon dioxide with approximately 11 metric tonnes. It was followed by Sweden with just over 8 metric tonnes while Italy and Portugal released an amount between 1 to 5 metric tonnes.
Sweden displayed a significant rise in the year 1977 releasing just over 10 metric tonnes of CO2. In 2007, United Kingdom still released the most amount of CO2 with approximately 9 metric tonnes while Sweden and Portugal tied up as the lowest contributors releasing about 5 metric tonnes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the overall contrast accurately: emissions rose in Italy and Portugal, while the UK and Sweden ended lower than they began. The opening and closing comparisons also correctly show the UK as the highest emitter in both 1967 and 2007, and Sweden’s peak in 1977 is reported accurately. This gives the response a sound overview and relevant supporting figures. However, the account is selective: Italy’s rise from about 4 to 7.6 tonnes and its eventual position above Sweden are not described, and the claim that Italy increased “throughout” overlooks its plateau from 1997 to 2007. To strengthen the report, cover the main stages of all four lines and make the overview more precise about the final ranking.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, and then details about the starting and ending years, with Sweden’s 1977 peak added as a notable feature. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “In 1967” help the reader follow the comparisons. The paragraphing is appropriate and the progression is easy to understand. To make the organisation more effective, group the trends more systematically—for example, describe the two rising countries together and then the two declining countries, or compare the lines by period. The final paragraph currently moves from Sweden’s peak to the 2007 figures without explaining the intervening trends, so a clearer sequence would make the report feel more complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “average amount,” “emissions,” “decline,” “significant rise,” and “metric tonnes.” These choices make the subject clear, and there is some variation in how you refer to the data. A few collocations are less natural or precise: “released the most amount” and “tied up as the lowest contributors” sound awkward, while “release of CO2” is less direct than describing emissions. Also, “lowest contributors” is not quite accurate for Sweden and Portugal in 2007, since they were tied at the lowest level among the four countries. Aim for concise, conventional chart language such as “recorded the highest emissions” and “had equal figures.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the contrast in “On the other hand” and the time clause in “In 2007.” Most sentences are clear, and the reader can follow the comparisons without difficulty. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. For example, “in the countries of United Kingdom” needs an article before the country name, and “between 1967 to 2007” should use “between … and …” or “from … to …”. In “United Kingdom released,” the country name also needs an article, and “an amount between 1 to 5” has an incorrect paired construction. Reviewing articles and preposition patterns would improve accuracy while preserving the clear sentence structure you already demonstrate.
