IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The graph illustrates the information about average carbon dioxide emissions per person in the four different countries from 1967 to 2007.
Overall it is evident that Uk and Sweden experienced the downward trend during the period, while Italy and Portugal recorded an upward trend.
Regarding the graph, In 1967 the Uk figure stood at 11 metric tonnes then after two decades it slighty around 10 metric tonnes and gradually decreased at end of the period roughly at 9 metric tonnes in 2007. In Sweden the CO2 emissions figure started at nearly 9 metric tonnes, after that it rose sharply to approximately 11 metric tonnes in 1977, then it declined significantly throughout the period and ending up with around 5 metric tonnes.
Furthermore, In 1967 Italy's figure stood at around 4 metric tonnes then it rose gradually during the period of 40 years and ending up with roughly 7.5 metric tonnes. Moreover, Portugal also recorded an upward trend, the figure stood at around 1 metric tonnes in 1967 and ending up with nearly 5 metric tonnes in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview of the main contrast: emissions fell in the UK and Sweden overall, while they rose in Italy and Portugal. The country-by-country account is relevant and includes useful start and end figures, such as the UK’s fall from about 11 to 9 tonnes and Portugal’s rise from about 1 to 5. Your description of Sweden’s peak in 1977 and subsequent decline also captures an important feature. To make the report more fully developed, compare the countries directly: for example, the UK remained highest in 2007, while Italy and Portugal finished at similar levels. Also note that Italy’s rise levelled off between 1997 and 2007, rather than continuing to increase throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, and then details about the two declining and two rising series. This makes the main progression easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Regarding the graph,” and “Furthermore” help signal shifts. The country-by-country grouping is appropriate for this chart. However, some linking is repetitive or slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “then” and “Moreover.” The final paragraph could also connect the two rising trends more explicitly by comparing their levels or rates of increase. Use cohesive devices to express relationships between data, not only to announce the next sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of chart vocabulary, including “downward trend,” “rose sharply,” “declined significantly,” and “stood at,” so the key trends are generally clear. There are also attempts at varied phrasing rather than relying only on “increased” and “decreased.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “it slighty around 10” does not form a clear expression, and “ending up with” is less appropriate for a formal report than “ending at.” “The information about” is also less direct than “changes in emissions.” Check spelling, especially “slightly,” and use precise verbs such as “fell,” “peaked,” and “levelled off” where they match the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the overall meaning remains understandable. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or inaccurately formed. For example, “then after two decades it slighty around 10” lacks a finite verb, while “and ending up with around 5” is not grammatically parallel with the preceding clause. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent: “In” is capitalised after a comma, and “Uk” should be written consistently as “the UK.” Improve control by making each trend description a complete clause, for example, “It then fell slightly to around 10 tonnes.” More accurate verb forms and sentence boundaries would make the report clearer and more polished.
