Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the four countries and the broad contrast: emissions rose in Italy and Portugal, while they fell in the UK and Sweden. You also note that the UK remained highest by 2007. However, the report only partially selects and accurately presents the main features. Portugal began at about 1.2 tonnes, not approximately 3, and the UK is called the “United State,” which misidentifies the country. The overview also misses important comparisons, such as Sweden peaking in 1977 before declining and Italy overtaking Sweden. Several figures are broadly close, but the inaccurate starting value for Portugal and limited coverage leave the trends under-developed. Include a clear overview and compare the countries’ relative levels and notable changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to country details, and it uses some linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “In addition.” However, progression is not consistently clear: the final paragraph repeats the claim that the UK was highest, while the country-by-country details do not always build a useful comparison. “While,” at the start of a sentence, is left as an incomplete contrast, and “However, although this falling” does not form a clear connection to the preceding information. Repeated use of the full phrase “average carbon dioxide emissions per person” also makes the report cumbersome. Grouping rising countries together and falling countries together, with clear references such as “this figure,” would improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “reaching,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and the same long phrase is repeated throughout instead of using concise references such as “emissions” or “the figure.” Several word choices and collocations are inaccurate: “highest popular” does not express the intended comparison, and “more popular than Portugal” is unsuitable for comparing emissions. There are also spelling errors, including “periode,” “aproximately,” “rised,” and “recoreded.” These noticeable problems make some statements difficult to interpret. Use precise trend language and check spelling and collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and more complex constructions, including “which stood at 4,5,” and a contrast introduced with “although.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors affect clarity. For example, “While, the average … decreased” is an incomplete clause, and “which stood at 4,5, and it rised” combines structures incorrectly. Subject–verb agreement is also inconsistent in “emissions … was,” and the final sentence, “although this falling,” lacks a grammatically complete phrase. Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention as well, particularly where clauses are joined. Practise forming complete sentences with accurate past-tense verbs, and use a consistent pattern such as “The figure stood at … before rising to …”
