IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the average of carbon dioxide emissions per person in four distinct countries in United KInigdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal in 1976 to 2007.

Overall, it can be seen that Italy and portugal rose significantly throughout the period, whereas United Kingdom experienced declined consistently over thirty-nine year period. While, Sweden recorded increased gradually over the period and declined consistently in tha last period.

United Kingdom recorded the highest average in the first period accumulated to 10.8 metric tonnes and decreased consistently at 8.8 metric tonnes in 2007. Moreover, Sweden experienced increased slightly at 8.8 metric tonnes in 1967 and 10.7 metric tonnes in 1977, and declined in 1987 to 2007 accounted for about 7 metric tonnes and approximately 5 metric tonnes, respectively.

Furthermore, Italy accounted for 4.2 metric tonnes in 1967, 6.3 metric tonnes in 1977, and remained stable at 7.9 metric tonnes in 1997 and 2007. While, Portugal experienced increased significantly about 1 metric tonnes in 1967 and just over 5 metric tonnes in 1997 and 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall contrast: emissions fell in the UK, while Italy and Portugal rose, and you also describe Sweden’s rise to 1977 followed by a decline. The response includes relevant figures and comparisons, such as the UK starting at about 10.8 tonnes and ending near 8.8, and Sweden peaking in 1977. This gives the report a clear overview and covers the four countries. Some details, however, are inaccurate or unclear: Italy reached about 7.6 tonnes in both 1997 and 2007, not 7.9, and Portugal continued rising to about 5.4 in 2007 rather than remaining unchanged after 1997. The opening also gives 1976 instead of 1967. More precise reporting of these later trends would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs that group the UK and Sweden before Italy and Portugal. This makes the main comparisons reasonably easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore.” At times, however, these links feel mechanical or are attached to incomplete sentence patterns. For example, “While, Sweden…” and the final “While, Portugal…” do not form effective standalone clauses, and the overview’s “Whereas” contrast is not smoothly integrated. Improve progression by linking each country’s figures directly to the relevant trend and using fewer, more natural transitions. Clearer sentence boundaries would also make the organisation feel more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “average,” “metric tonnes,” “declined,” and “throughout the period,” so the reader can understand the subject and broad trends. There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “recorded,” “experienced,” and “accounted for.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “the average of carbon dioxide emissions” is better expressed as “average carbon dioxide emissions,” while “accumulated to” does not naturally describe a figure. “Increased slightly at” and “experienced increased” also show difficulty with collocation and word forms. Spelling errors such as “KInigdom” and “tha” further reduce control. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language rather than forcing synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and more complex comparisons, including “whereas” clauses, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors occur across sentence patterns and verb forms. For example, “United Kingdom experienced declined” combines incompatible verb forms; “Sweden recorded increased gradually” has the same problem. The sentence beginning “While, Sweden…” is a fragment, and “declined in 1987 to 2007 accounted for…” does not form a clear grammatical relationship. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “in United Kingdom” and “in 1976 to 2007.” Work on building complete clauses with a clear subject and finite verb, and check tense and preposition patterns. More accurate control of these structures would make your comparisons easier to read.
