IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The following chart demonstrates the overall estimate of carbon dioxide released by each resident of Europiean countries according to collected data from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, the chart represents a highest trend of CO2 among UK residents in the year 1967.While on the other hand, least amount of CO2 was emitted by residents of Portugal in the same year.
Furthermore, if we compare the results of each year separately then we found some intesresting facts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify two accurate headline facts: the UK had the highest emissions in 1967, while Portugal had the lowest. However, the response does not summarise the graph’s main developments across the period: for example, UK emissions declined, Sweden peaked in 1977 and then fell, and Italy and Portugal rose. The final sentence promises comparisons but gives no figures or findings, so the task is addressed only minimally and the key information is not selected or reported. The response is also 75 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to cover the data. To improve, provide a clear overview of the contrasting trends, then support it with selected comparisons from the start and end of the period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the chart, a separate paragraph gives an overview, and “Furthermore” signals a move to further discussion. The ideas are generally understandable, but the progression stops before any year-by-year comparisons are actually presented. The phrase “if we compare the results of each year separately” is a promise rather than a developed link to evidence, and “While on the other hand” combines two contrast markers awkwardly. Build a clear sequence with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs grouping the countries by trend. Use linking expressions only where they accurately show the relationship between the information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “carbon dioxide,” “emitted,” “residents,” and “trend,” so the subject is recognisable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “according to collected data,” although this is not a natural way to introduce a graph. Spelling errors in “Europiean” and “intesresting” are noticeable, and “overall estimate” is imprecise because the chart reports average emissions per person. The limited range also means that the response cannot describe rises, falls, peaks, or comparisons. Use accurate graph language such as “average emissions per person,” “rose,” “declined,” and “remained stable,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You produce several short sentences that communicate the basic topic, and the sentence beginning “if we compare” shows an attempt to use a conditional structure. However, the range is narrow, and some sentence construction and punctuation problems remain. “While on the other hand, least amount…” is an incomplete contrast clause; it needs to be joined to a main clause, and “the least amount” requires an article. There is also no space after the full stop in “1967.While,” which makes the boundary between sentences unclear. The phrase “then we found” shifts into the past without a clear reason. Practise complete comparisons, for example, “The UK recorded the highest figure, whereas Portugal had the lowest,” and use consistent tense and sentence punctuation.
