Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the four countries and the period, and it recognises the broad contrast between falling emissions in the UK and Sweden and rising figures in Italy and Portugal. However, the overview is unclear (“Overall it is clear that CO2 emiited per person”) and the account does not accurately report several key features. For example, Sweden peaked at about 10.3 tonnes in 1977, but the response gives this as 10.4 in a confusing sentence; Italy and Portugal did not remain at the same level from 1997 to 2007, since Portugal rose slightly while Italy was stable. The claim that the two countries’ figures were “nearby” by 1977 is also unsupported. Select the main peaks, endpoints and contrasting trends, and state them clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by comments on the UK and Sweden, then Italy and Portugal. Linking phrases such as “After that,” “On the other hand,” and “Moreover” show an effort to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because several sentences combine unclear or conflicting information, and the overview does not provide a usable summary. The repeated construction about “persons who emitted CO2” also makes the account feel repetitive rather than logically developed. Group the countries by trend, use one clear overview, and compare their figures within each paragraph. Ensure that each linking phrase expresses the relationship between the facts that follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “line graph,” “carbon dioxide,” “tonnes,” “increase,” and “decreased,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “persons who emitted CO2,” “CO2 emitted persons,” and “there seen to be increase.” Repeatedly describing people as emitting the gas also obscures that the graph measures emissions per person. Spelling errors, including “emiited,” “emmited,” “sweeden,” and “personns,” further reduce clarity. Use precise terms such as “per-capita emissions,” “the figure,” and “rose/fell to,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few different sentence patterns, including time clauses beginning “After that” and “from 1977 to 1987,” but most sentences rely on simple structures and the more complex attempts are often faulty. Examples include “the carbon dioxide emmited by every pesons were 10.8 tonnes,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “there is gradually decreased,” which has an incorrect verb construction. Tense use also shifts between past data and present forms such as “there is increase” and “remains the same.” Articles and sentence boundaries are inconsistent as well. Practise describing completed trends consistently in the past tense, with clear subjects—for example, “Emissions in the UK fell gradually”—and proofread each sentence for agreement and verb form.
