IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Information pertaining to the rate of emissions of carbon dioxide by per person in UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from 1967 to 2007 is depicted by the provided line graph.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the rate of emmission of CO2 was increased in Italy and Portugal, whereas people of UK and Sweden were aware and polluting less from years.

Scrutinizing deeper into the line graph, in UK, the rate of emission of carbon dioxide decreased steeply about 2 metric tonnes from 1967 to 2007. The proportion of carbon dioxide emission boosted from around 8.8 metric tonnes to 10.5 metric tonnes between 1967 and 1977 in Sweden. In addition, the rate of CO2 emission decreased significantly from approximately 10.5 metric tonnes to 7 metric tonnes in 1977, which shows the cooperation of citizens in Sweden.

Digging deeper into the chart, the rate of CO2 emission increased considerably in Italy from 4.5 to 6.5 metric tonnes between 1967 and 1977. From 1997 to 2007, the emission of CO2 remain steady at around 7.5 metric tonnes by per person. Morover, the rate of emission of carbon dioxide by per person in Portugal increased slowly from 1 metric tonnes to 5 metric tonnes between 1967 and 2007. It shows unawareness of people, who lived in Portugal.

Hereby, I conclude my report.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the overall contrast between rising emissions in Italy and Portugal and falling emissions in the UK and Sweden, and include several relevant figures. The UK’s decline of about two tonnes and Sweden’s rise to a peak followed by a fall are broadly represented. However, the overview is not fully accurate: saying people in the UK and Sweden were “aware and polluting less” assigns a cause that the graph cannot establish. Some key comparisons are also underdeveloped, such as the UK remaining the highest emitter throughout and Portugal rising to roughly the same level as Sweden by 2007. The account of Portugal as increasing “slowly” also understates its substantial rise. Focus on describing trends and comparisons rather than explaining them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, two detail paragraphs and a closing sentence. The country-by-country reporting and time references generally make the information easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “In addition” and “Moreover” help connect details, although some transitions feel mechanical, and “Digging deeper” repeats the same framing used earlier. The final sentence, “Hereby, I conclude my report,” adds no chart information and is unnecessary in this task. Cohesion is occasionally weakened by unclear references, particularly “which shows the cooperation of citizens in Sweden,” where the connection between the data and the claim is not justified. Grouping countries by rising and falling trends would create a clearer progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “metric tonnes,” “decreased,” “increased considerably” and “remain steady,” so the main trends can be understood. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “depicted” and “Scrutinizing.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “rate of emissions … by per person,” “proportion of carbon dioxide emission,” and “polluting less” do not express the graph’s measure as clearly as “per-person emissions.” “Steeply” is not the best description of the UK’s gradual decline, while “slowly” understates Portugal’s rise. Spelling slips such as “emmission” and “Morover” also reduce accuracy. Prefer precise, natural collocations over elaborate wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including time clauses such as “between 1967 and 1977” and a relative clause beginning “which shows.” Most sentences communicate the intended trend, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the rate … was increased” uses an unnecessary passive form; “the emission of CO2 remain steady” has incorrect subject–verb agreement and tense; and “from 1 metric tonnes” has a singular/plural mismatch. The opening phrase “by per person” also reflects an awkward grammatical construction. Use “per person” directly before or after “emissions,” and keep past-tense verbs consistent when describing the historical data. Greater control of these forms would make the report smoother.
