IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the average carbon dioxide emissions per individual in four different countries during four decades.

Overall, what stands out from the graph is that in Itlay and Portugal, carbon dioxide emission increases during given period ,while in contrast ,United Kingdom and Sweden saw a considerable decrease .

Initially,in United Kingdom, almost 11 metric tones carbon emission is recorded per person in 1967 ,this number is decreased during every decade and reached nearly 9 in 2007.In Sweden,in 1967,9 metric tone CO2 gas is release but in 1977,this saw a slight rise but after that again decrease and dropped down to almost 5 in a year 2007.

On the other hand,in Italy and Portugal CO2 emissions increases during every decade. In 1967,4 metric tone CO2 is released in Italy which increases until 1997 and than became stable in next decade .In Portugal, nearly 1 and half metric tone emission of CO2 is recorded in 1967 and by the end of 1997 its almost reached 5 metric tone and than became stable just as in Italy in 2007

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall contrast: emissions rise in Italy and Portugal, while the UK and Sweden decline over the period. The account also includes relevant starting and ending figures for the UK and Sweden, and notes that Italy and Portugal level off towards the end. These features show a sound grasp of the graph. However, the overview is not fully precise: Italy rises until 1997 and then remains stable, whereas Portugal continues rising through 2007, so saying both countries increase “during every decade” and later become stable is inaccurate. The comparison that the UK remains the highest emitter in 2007, while Portugal and Sweden finish at similar levels, is also missing. More precise coverage of these differences would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the declining countries separately from the rising ones. Transitions such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the main contrast, and the sequence generally moves from earlier to later years. This coherent structure is a strength. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. The long final sentence combines Portugal’s rise, its 1997 level, and the comparison with Italy without clearly distinguishing the two trends. Punctuation spacing also makes transitions harder to read. Use shorter sentences and clearer references—for example, state separately that Italy levels off after 1997, while Portugal continues to rise to 2007.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “average carbon dioxide emissions,” “per person,” “metric tones,” “decrease,” and “stable,” so the main information is generally understandable. There is also some attempt to vary phrasing, such as “saw a considerable decrease” and “dropped down.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “carbon emission is recorded,” “CO2 gas is release,” and “increases during every decade.” Spelling errors such as “Itlay” and “tones” also reduce precision. Aim for standard graph-reporting expressions such as “emissions per capita,” “stood at,” “rose to,” and “levelled off,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including contrasts with “while in contrast” and time clauses such as “after that.” The reader can usually understand the intended trends, but grammatical control is uneven. Verb forms and agreement are problematic in examples such as “emission increases,” “CO2 gas is release,” and “this number is decreased”; past-tense reporting would be more appropriate. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in phrases such as “in a year 2007” and “almost 11 metric tones carbon emission is recorded.” Several sentences run together, and missing spaces after commas affect punctuation. Practise accurate past-tense forms and build shorter, complete sentences; this would preserve your range while making the report clearer.
