Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast between the countries: the UK and Sweden began at high levels and declined, while Italy and Portugal rose. The final overview is relevant, and the opening figures for 1967 are broadly close to the chart. However, coverage is partial and some details are inaccurate or unclear. You write that emissions in Italy and Sweden rose by 2007, although Sweden declined; this conflicts with your earlier statement that both fell. The response also gives little account of the changing pattern, such as Sweden peaking in 1977 or Italy overtaking Sweden by 1997. Develop the overview around these key comparisons and report the main trends consistently and accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to details and then a concluding overview. The final paragraph gives a clear summary, and phrases such as “In contrast” help signal comparison. However, progression is uneven: the second paragraph focuses on starting values, while the next paragraph repeats the decline-and-rise pattern without adding much detail. The statement that Italy and Sweden rose also contradicts the preceding sentence, weakening the connection between ideas. Some linking phrases, including “In Overall,” are awkwardly placed. Organise the body paragraphs by trend—for example, declining countries and rising countries—and use clear references and transitions to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “emissions,” “metric tonnes,” “declines,” and “increased,” so the general subject is understandable. However, the range and control are limited, with repeated use of “amount” and “contribution rate” where more precise descriptions of trends are needed. Several spelling errors—such as “porportion,” “emmiosions,” “Unitied,” and “swedon”—are noticeable and can distract the reader. Some expressions are also unnatural, including “added by” and “drop down.” Build a reliable set of chart language, such as “stood at,” “fell steadily,” “rose to,” and “remained stable,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a time clause in “While contribution rate …” and a contrastive sentence beginning “In contrast.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “in between two years 1967 and 2007,” “emissions amount released … drop down,” and “rose up by Italy and Sweden,” where sentence structure, verb forms, and prepositions are not controlled. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “in Overall carbon emission amount.” Practise forming accurate comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “Emissions in the UK fell from about 11 to 9 tonnes per person.”
