IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the average carbon dioxide created per head in four european countries, over the period of 40 years.
Overall, the carbon dioxide emissions per head have decreased in both United Kingdom as well as Sweden. However, emissions per individual in Italy and Portugal have surged during the period.
Firstly, in United Kingdom the CO2 release per head was recorded at 11 metric tonnes in year 1967, which then continiously fell to less 9 metric tonnes in 200. Moreover, in Sweden the earlier noted CO2 realease per person amounted to 9 metric tonnes approxiamtely, which then soared to over 10.5 metric tonnes in 1997, before falling to nearly 5 mteric tonnes by year 2007.
Furthermore, Italy recorded its green house gaseous release at nearly 4 metric tonnes per head in 2007, which was observed to steadily rise throughout the 40 years period to reach almost double the emissions created at the start. Lastly, Portugal had the lowest release of CO2 per person in 2007 at over 1 metric tonn, but during the 40 years period it kept on rising to reach the peak of over 5 metric tonn CO2 release per individual in year 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide a relevant overview, identifying the broad decline in the UK and Sweden and the rise in Italy and Portugal. You also include several figures and comparisons, such as the UK falling from about 11 tonnes to below 9. However, important details are misreported: Sweden peaked in 1977, not 1997, and Italy began at about 4 tonnes in 1967, rather than reaching that level in 2007. Portugal’s lowest figure was at the start of the period, not in 2007. The overview would be more informative if it also noted that the UK remained highest throughout and that Italy and Portugal were level with Sweden by 2007. These inaccuracies and omissions limit how fully the main features are reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the countries. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader, and the country trends are generally grouped in a sensible order. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some linking language is mechanical, and the comparisons between countries are limited; the report often moves from one country to another without showing how their figures relate. The final sentence also repeats the rise in Portugal rather than drawing the comparison together. To make progression more flexible, group countries with similar trends and use clearer references to connect their starting and ending positions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “per head,” “surged,” “steadily rise,” and “metric tonnes.” These choices make the subject clear, and some variation avoids repeating “carbon dioxide” throughout. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph: “carbon dioxide created,” “green house gaseous release,” and “release of CO2” are less precise than standard terms such as emissions. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “continiously,” “realease,” “approxiamtely,” and “mteric.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Aim for consistent, accurate collocations and check spelling carefully, especially in repeated technical terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which then” and “before falling,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, however. In “in both United Kingdom as well as Sweden,” the paired construction is faulty and the article is missing; write “in both the United Kingdom and Sweden.” The phrase “fell to less 9 metric tonnes” needs “less than,” while “in year 1967” and “the 40 years period” need articles or a different construction. The sentence about Sweden also gives an unclear time reference, though the incorrect year is primarily a data-reporting issue. More consistent control of articles, prepositions, and sentence phrasing would improve accuracy.
