IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates the combustion of carbondioxide gas per individual in four different europeon countries ranging from year 1967 to 2007.
Overall it can be seen that that usages of carbondioxide gas increased in Portugal and in Italy with the passage of time while United kingdom and Sweden showed a relative decreased in carbondioxide emission.
The usage of carbondioxide in Portugal in 1967 is less then 2 metric tonnes and surged each year and reached at a level of 5.75 per metric tonnes in 2007.On the other hand the carbondioxide usage in Italy is slightly above 4 metric tonnes in 1967 and rose to 6.1per metric tonnes in 1977 and a slightly increased to 6.98 metric tonns in 1997 and remained steady at that point in 2007 respectively.
The expension of carbondioxide in United states was highest amoung all the four countries to around 10.5 metric tonnes in 1967 then significantlly decreaded to around 8.2 metric tonnes in 2007.However, the most drastic change had been seen in the emssion of carbondixide in Sweden which was 8.3 in 1967 then moved upward to 10.2 in 1967 shows the highest peak in its usage then falls to 6.2 in 1987 then continously decread to 5,75 metic tonnes in 2007 and levels with portugal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the broad contrast between rising emissions in Portugal and Italy and falling emissions in the UK and Sweden, and you include several figures. However, the report only partially selects and accurately reports the main features. The UK is incorrectly called the “United states,” and Sweden’s peak is assigned to 1967 rather than 1977; the text also says its fall to 6.2 occurred in 1987, although that figure is closer to 1997. Italy’s final level is described as steady, but the stated figures do not match the chart’s approximate values. The overview is relevant but general, and the key comparison that the UK remained highest while Portugal rose to match Sweden by 2007 could be stated more clearly. Check each figure and year against the graph before writing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs comparing country trends. Grouping Portugal with Italy and the UK with Sweden gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the final paragraph is weakened by the repeated reference to 1967 for Sweden’s rise and by the abrupt transition from the UK to Sweden. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” are used, but some connections are not precise, and the repeated “carbondioxide” makes the writing feel repetitive. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each country’s figures in chronological order; accurate references such as “by 1977” and “by 2007” would make the comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of terms related to trends, including “surged,” “remained steady,” “peak,” and “drastic change,” so the vocabulary is not entirely repetitive. Nevertheless, the range is limited by frequent repetition of “usage” and “carbondioxide,” and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph. For example, “combustion” and “expension” do not convey emissions, while “relative decreased” is not an appropriate phrase. Spelling errors such as “europeon,” “significantlly,” and “decreaded” are noticeable and can distract the reader. Build a reliable set of graph-description collocations, especially “emissions per person,” “rose to,” “declined to,” and “remained stable at,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and some longer sentences with contrast, for example, “On the other hand…” and “while United kingdom and Sweden…”. However, attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, and errors recur in agreement, articles, tense, and sentence boundaries. Examples include “that usages … increased,” “United kingdom … showed a relative decreased,” and “then moved upward to 10.2 in 1967 shows the highest peak,” where the clause structure is incomplete or confused. Punctuation is also inconsistent: there is no space after several full stops, and commas are used in place of decimal points in “5,75.” Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine them with accurate clauses using “while” or “whereas.”
