Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the graph’s subject and period, and your overview recognises the broad rise in Italy and Portugal and the decline in the UK. You also include several relevant figures, such as Sweden’s peak in 1977 and the similar levels for Sweden and Portugal in 2007. However, the overview is unclear and partly contradictory: it says Italy rose steadily, then describes a dramatic rise followed by a sudden fall, although Italy’s figure generally increased and levelled off at the end. Some details are inaccurate or confusing, including the UK’s 2007 value being described as approximately 9 rather than about 8.7, and the claim that Sweden exceeded Italy in 1987. Select the main trends accurately and explain the key comparisons more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, so there is some organisation and the reader can identify which countries are being discussed. However, progression within paragraphs is often difficult to follow. The overview repeats country trends and contains a contradiction about Italy, while the final paragraph moves from Italy to Portugal and then back to Sweden without a clear comparison structure. Linking expressions such as “On the other hand” and “while” are sometimes used awkwardly or without clear punctuation, and several long sentences combine multiple figures and trends. Grouping the countries by direction of change, then comparing their endpoints, would create a clearer progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “average carbon dioxide emissions,” “metric tonnes,” “increased” and “downward trend,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. For example, “normal carbon dioxide productions” is not a natural way to describe per-person emissions, and “suddenly went downward trend” does not express the change accurately. Spelling errors such as “descresed,” “drameticaly” and “emmisions” are noticeable throughout. Aim for precise, conventional graph language and check spelling carefully; terms such as “fell,” “rose,” “peaked” and “remained stable” can describe the trends more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example when describing Sweden’s rise in 1977 and subsequent decline. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors make some relationships between figures and years hard to interpret. Examples include “Italy and Portugal steadily increased” (the emissions, rather than the countries, increased), “which slightly decreased … in 1967 and 2007 respectively,” and sentence fragments beginning “While in United Kingdom.” Articles, sentence boundaries, verb forms and punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense forms consistently when reporting the historical data.
