The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart shows information about average carbon dioxide emissions per person consume in four different countries; such as United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden and Portual from 1967 to 2007 and carbon emission consumption in metric tonnes.

Overall, the United Kingdom was the substantial user of carbon emission in 1976 and Prtugal was the lowest consumption at the same year. However, Sweden dramatically change in 1977 and onward fell. Furthermore, Italy in 1967 carbon emission 4.2 metric tonnes consumed and throughout the period increased.

It is noted that, In 1967, Portugal 1.2 metric tonnes carbon emission consumed and slightly increase decade by decade, at the end 5.3 metric tonnes consume per person in 2007. Sweden second highest consumer in 1967 and in the end, 2007, his consumption per perosn same as Portugal.

Italy second lowest carbon emission consumption level from the starting point, but in 1997, his consumption per person 7.4 metric tonnes consume, and this is the second highest level at the end. However, United Kingdom was the highest consumption (11 metric tonnes) level in 1967, after that slightly decreased throughout the period. At the end, his per person consumption level was the highest as compare to other countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the overall contrast between the UK’s high emissions and Portugal’s low starting point, and you report several relevant trends, including Sweden’s rise and subsequent fall and Italy’s increase. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the UK was highest throughout the period, not just in 1967, and Portugal was lowest in 1967 rather than in 1976. The response also misses key comparisons, such as Italy overtaking Sweden by 1987 and Portugal catching Sweden by 2007. Some figures are approximate but broadly sound; the main issue is that the selected features are incomplete and a few claims are unclear. A more precise overview and clearer comparisons would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an identifiable introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, so the reader can recognise a basic structure. However, progression within the paragraphs is uneven: the overview mixes separate observations, while the final paragraph moves between Italy and the UK without a clear comparison or consistent time sequence. Linking words such as “However” and “Furthermore” are used, but sometimes do not express the relationship between the ideas clearly. References such as “his consumption” are also unclear. Organise the details by country or by the main trends, and use linking phrases only where they accurately show contrast, sequence or addition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “metric tonnes,” “increased,” “decreased” and “highest,” which helps communicate the chart’s subject. However, the range is limited and several repeated or inaccurate expressions make the report less natural, such as “carbon emission consumption” and “consumed per person.” There are also spelling errors in “Portual,” “Prtugal” and “perosn,” and “substantial user” is not an appropriate collocation for emissions. Aim for precise chart language such as “emissions per capita,” “stood at,” “rose” and “declined.” Check spelling and avoid repeating “consumption” when a more direct noun or verb is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a time clause beginning “after that.” Nevertheless, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “average carbon dioxide emissions per person consume,” the fragment “Italy in 1967 carbon emission 4.2 metric tonnes consumed,” and “his consumption per perosn same as Portugal,” which lacks a verb. Articles, sentence boundaries and verb forms also need attention, as in “throughout the period. At the end.” Practise complete subject–verb sentences and consistent past-tense reporting, for example, “Italy’s emissions stood at 4.3 tonnes in 1967 and rose thereafter.”
