Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates carbon dioxide emissions in metric tonnes in four different countries from 1967 to 2007.

Overall, it is evident that in Sweden the CO2 emission level decrease more significantly than the United Kindom. Whearas, in itlay the emission of CO2 increase though out the years.

Moving to the details, the level of CO2 fell down in the United kingdom from 11 metric tonnes to 7 metric tones, which is the largest daramatic change then the other countries. However, in Sweden the level of CO2 first rose from 6 metric tonnes to 10.5 metric tonne then decresaed to 7 metric tonnes.Further, its stopped at 5 metric tonnes. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the graph’s subject and period, and you attempt to describe trends in all four countries. However, the overview is incomplete and includes a misleading comparison: Sweden’s emissions did not decrease more than the UK’s overall, and the UK remained the highest throughout. Several figures and country references are inaccurate. For example, the UK fell from about 10.8 to 8.7 tonnes, not 11 to 7; the paragraph then says “In United kingdom” for the figures that actually describe Italy. Italy rose to about 7.6 tonnes by 1997 and then remained level, rather than ending at 6.9. Portugal began near 1.2 and reached about 5.4, not 0.6 and 4.7. Select the main comparisons accurately and give a clear overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between points. However, progression within the details is difficult to follow because the countries are not consistently identified or grouped. In particular, “In United kingdom” introduces figures for Italy, making the comparison confusing, while the Sweden description is split across several short statements. Some transitions, including “Moving to the details” and “Further,” feel mechanical rather than helping the reader understand the data. Organise the body by country or by contrasting trends, and use clear references so each figure is unmistakably linked to its series.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “metric tonnes,” “rose,” and “decreased,” so the reader can generally recognise the subject and direction of change. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. Phrases such as “fell down,” “leveled up,” and “stayed cobstant” are not natural descriptions for a line graph; “declined,” “increased,” and “remained constant” would be more appropriate. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Whearas,” “itlay,” “daramatic,” and “decresaed.” Aim for a small set of precise trend verbs and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a relative clause in “which further rose.” Nevertheless, errors are frequent, and some sentences are incomplete or difficult to interpret. “Overall, it is evident that in Sweden the CO2 emission level decrease” has an incorrect verb form, while “Whearas, in itlay…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. There are also problems with articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “then decresaed to 7 metric tonnes.Further” and “at the end of 2007 it had 6.9 metric tonnes.” Use complete clauses, maintain past tense consistently, and check punctuation and spacing between sentences.
