IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the average metric tonnes of carbon dioxide people had released in United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from the year 1967 to 2007.

Overall, it can be seen that there was a downword trend shown by every country in term of emissions of carbon dioxide. While Sweden was considerd a deep dip after two decades.

In 1967, Italy and Portugal was recorded a sligh growth in starting years and record a dip in 1977 and 1997. From 1997 after the decrease to 2007 in Italy and Portugal both considered a constant growth.

United Kingdoom was accounted for the highest figure over the period. In was the only country which is recorded as more then 8 metric tonnes. However, Serden was recorded as the second highest emission of CO2 but after the largest drop in 1977 made it noticable as the lowest metric tonnes in the end of 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the countries and period, and you attempt an overview, but the main trend is reported inaccurately: emissions did not fall in every country. The UK declined, and Sweden fell after peaking in 1977, while Italy and Portugal rose overall; Italy then levelled off. Your account of Italy and Portugal is especially unclear and reverses the pattern when it says they recorded a dip and later “constant growth.” You correctly note that the UK remained highest, but Sweden did not become the lowest by 2007: Portugal and Sweden were both about 5.4 tonnes. To strengthen the response, select the key contrasting trends and support them with accurate comparisons and a few figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an opening, an overview, and further details, so there is some organisation. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the country trends are grouped unclearly and several sentences do not express a clear relationship between events. For example, “In 1967, Italy and Portugal was recorded a sligh growth in starting years and record a dip in 1977 and 1997” is hard to interpret, while “From 1997 after the decrease to 2007” gives a confusing sequence. The linking words “Overall,” “While,” and “However” provide some signposting, but “While” introduces an incomplete contrast. Organise the body by contrasting the declining countries with the rising ones, and use clear time references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “highest figure,” “deep dip,” and “metric tonnes,” and the reader can generally identify the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the trends difficult to understand. Phrases such as “was recorded a sligh growth,” “considered a constant growth,” and “noticable as the lowest metric tonnes” are not natural ways to describe graph data. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “downword,” “United Kingdoom,” and “Serden.” Use precise trend verbs such as “rose,” “declined,” and “levelled off,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including an overview beginning “Overall” and a contrast introduced by “However.” However, grammatical errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to understand. Examples include “Italy and Portugal was recorded,” where subject–verb agreement and sentence construction are faulty, and “In was the only country,” which lacks a clear subject. The sentence beginning “While Sweden…” is also incomplete, and tense and article use are inconsistent in phrases such as “people had released in United Kingdom.” Sentence boundaries and spacing need attention, too, as in “tonnes.However.” Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and build clear subject–verb sentences before adding subordinate clauses.
