IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graph illustrates average record from a group of europian countries that how much of carbon dioxide is exhaled per individual between 1967 and 2007.
Overall, This graph shows an increase in italy and portugal while a greater decline has been noted throughout the graph. The emission of carbon dioxide is measured in metric tonnes in this survey.
The above mentioned grapgh clearly shows a huge spike in emission of carbon dioxide in portugal which was very less in 1967, But with passage of time it goes higher and reach above 5 metric tonnes in 2007.Furthermore, Itlay was producing 2nd lowest carbon dioxide per person in 1967 but the emisson of carbon dioxide also recorded higher in italy throughout the time which almost touch 8 metric tonnes in 2007.
The other two states like UK and sweden showed a greater decline in emission.By looking into the graph it clearly shows a constant depression in Uk.It can be seen that by year of 1967 the average emisson per person was almost 11 matric tonnes which came below 9 metic tonnes.Additionally, In sweden the graph showed a little spike in 1977 to almost 10.5 metric tonnes but Later on it decreased an came below 6 metric tonnes by year of 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall contrast: emissions rise in Italy and Portugal, while the UK and Sweden decline over the period. You also include relevant comparisons and several approximate figures, such as the UK falling from about 11 to below 9 tonnes and Sweden peaking in 1977 before dropping. This covers the task well, and the overview is clear. To make the account more complete and precise, distinguish the countries’ different patterns: Sweden rises to a peak and then falls, whereas the UK declines steadily; Italy levels off at the end, rather than continuing to rise. The claim that Portugal had a “huge spike” is somewhat overstated, and the opening description of emissions as “exhaled” is inaccurate. More measured reporting would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the rising and falling country trends. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Additionally” help signal relationships, and the country groupings are sensible. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and punctuation or sentence boundaries sometimes interrupt the flow—for example, “throughout the graph. The emission” and “2007.Furthermore”. The overview also repeats the broad trend rather than setting out the key contrasts in a fully organised way. Use clear paragraph breaks and connect comparisons directly, while avoiding repeated phrases such as “the graph clearly shows,” to make progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “average,” “metric tonnes,” “decline,” and “emission,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range and control are limited, with repeated use of “emission of carbon dioxide” and several inaccurate or unnatural choices. “Exhaled” does not describe emissions in this context, “huge spike” overstates Portugal’s gradual rise, and “constant depression” is not an appropriate way to describe a downward trend. Spelling errors such as “europian,” “grapgh,” “Itlay,” and “emisson” are also noticeable. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully; a few well-chosen terms such as “per-capita emissions,” “rose steadily,” and “declined gradually” would improve clarity and variety.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “which,” and the main trends can usually be understood. However, control is uneven: several sentence patterns are faulty or awkward, as in “illustrates average record … that how much,” “which almost touch 8,” and “it decreased an came below 6.” There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, such as “the emission … is measured” after a plural subject and the run-on punctuation around “2007.Furthermore”. Capitalisation is inconsistent, too. Build accuracy by using straightforward comparative structures first—for example, “Italy’s figure rose to about 7.6 tonnes”—then add complex clauses only when their grammar is secure.
