Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the average carbon dioxide co2 emissions per person in four diffrerent countries over a 40 year period ,from 1967 to 2007.

overall, the uk had the highest per capita emissions throughout the period ,although its figure decline gradually, swedon also experienced a downward trend ,particularly after reaching a peak in 1977.in contrast ,emissions in italy and portugal increased ,with italy becoming the second highest emmiter by the end of the period

in 1967,the average person in uk produced approximately 11 metric tonnes of co2 ,compared with around 8.5 toones in swedon.the british figure remained stable until 1977before declining steadily to about 8.5 toones in 2007.swedons emissions initially rose to just over 10 toones in 1977,making it alostr equall to the uk,,,,,however ,this was followed by a large decrease to approximately 7toones in 1987,after which teh figure continuod to fall ,reaching about 5 ttoones by 2007.

by compARISON ITALY EMISSIONS INCREASED CONSIDERABLY overa period .starting at just over 4 toones per person in 1967,teh figure rose to around 6 toones in 1977and continued climbing ,reaching 7.5 toones

portugal emission the lowest at 1 toone per person.however its figure rose steadily over the next periods

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall patterns: the UK remains the highest emitter while declining, Sweden falls after its 1977 peak, and Italy and Portugal rise. Several figures are also broadly accurate, including the UK’s starting level and Sweden’s peak. However, some key details are incomplete or imprecise. The account of Italy stops at about 7.5 tonnes and does not report that it levels off by 1997 and remains there in 2007; the final comparison that Italy is second-highest is useful but would be stronger with this endpoint. Portugal’s rise is mentioned, but its ending level and its convergence with Sweden at about 5.4 tonnes are omitted. Develop these features to make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the countries’ figures. Contrast markers such as “in contrast” and “by comparison” help signal changes in direction, and the UK and Sweden are grouped effectively. However, the final paragraph is incomplete: Portugal is introduced but not compared through to 2007, and the Italy description breaks off before its final trend is clear. Some transitions are awkward or inconsistently punctuated, and the long Sweden sentence carries several stages without clear separation. Use complete, balanced body paragraphs and organise the countries by trend, while ensuring each paragraph progresses from the starting point to the endpoint.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “per capita emissions,” “downward trend,” “peak,” “declining steadily,” and “increased considerably.” These choices communicate the main patterns, but spelling and word-form errors are conspicuous, for example “diffrerent,” “swedon,” “emmiter,” and “continuod.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “the average person … produced” and “portugal emission the lowest.” Repeated use of “figure” and “toones” limits precision, while inconsistent capitalisation distracts from the report. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations such as “emissions per person,” “stood at,” and “rose to,” and proofread country names and key terms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex forms, including the overview clause “although its figure decline gradually” and the contrast structure “however, this was followed by…”. The sequence of past events is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “its figure decline” needs a past-tense verb (“declined”), and “the average person in UK” needs an article before “the UK.” Several sentences run together or lack clear sentence boundaries, particularly the long account of Sweden, and punctuation is inconsistent. The final Portugal sentence is also a fragment rather than a complete report. Build accuracy by checking past-tense forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, while retaining the range of clauses you are attempting.
