Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the countries and period, and it attempts to describe trends, but the main features are not reported accurately or clearly enough. The claim that emissions in both the UK and Italy are “maximum” is misleading: the UK starts highest and declines, while Italy rises and then levels off. The account also says Italy’s figure in 2007 is “maximum” without making a clear comparison, and the description of Portugal’s final period is unclear. A useful overview should state that the UK remains highest despite falling, while Portugal rises from the lowest level and Italy overtakes Sweden. The response is also 26 words below the 150-word minimum; the 12 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic sequence from an introduction to descriptions of the countries, and linking expressions such as “Moving towards the explanation” and “While” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the response is not divided into clear paragraphs, and the country-by-country account does not build a clear overall comparison. Several transitions are awkward or confusing, particularly “After, in Italy” and the repeated use of “While,” which makes relationships between trends difficult to follow. Grouping the overview separately, then comparing the declining UK and Sweden with the rising Italy and Portugal, would create clearer progression. Use linking words only where their relationship is precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “per person,” and “metric tonnes,” so the subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is narrow and key terms are repeated frequently, especially “average carbon dioxide CO2 emissions.” Several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unclear, such as “meximum,” “dioxido,” and “emissions per people.” The phrase “average almost is decrease” also does not express the trend naturally. More precise trend vocabulary would help distinguish a fall, a rise, and a plateau, while accurate spelling and collocations would make the report easier to understand. Avoid repeating both “carbon dioxide” and “CO2” together.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, including clauses joined with “but” and “while,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure and agreement appear in examples such as “in United Kingdom and Italy carbon dioxide CO2 emission per person is meximum and is minimum” and “average carbon dioxide CO2 emissions in 1967 to 2007 is minimum.” The time relationships are also expressed with incomplete patterns, as in “in 1967 to 1977.” These problems make some comparisons difficult to interpret. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, use past-tense verbs consistently for the historical data, and check articles and singular/plural agreement. Clearer sentence boundaries and punctuation would also help.
