IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

INTRODUCTION:

The graph shows the average of carbon dioxide emission of every single places in those countries which is written in graph. We find the ratio of this countries like Italy,Sweden,Portugal, and United Kingdom between 1967 and 2007.

OVERVIEW:

As we shown in a figure, there are four countries. In this countries we ote the ratio between them. Some release more carbon dioxide day by day. Moreover, some countries remain same.On the other hand few countries low the ratio of carbon dioxide with the passage of time.

PARAGRAPH:

The diagram shows the average of carbon dioxide emission per person in some countries .For instance, United kingdom,Sweden,Italy, and portugal between 1967 and 2007.In x axis we have 5 years .First is 1967 then 1977 after that 1987,1997 and in last 2007.In y axis we start with 0 and end in 12 with the gap of two in every single digit. Moreover, there are four lines in graph .Every line shows the ratio of their own country.Furthermore, Portugal start with 0.After the pasage of time it become increased. At last it ends between 4 to 6.

On the other hand Italy starts with the 4 carbon dioxide in metric tonnes and it become raised day by day. After that,Sweden emission incresed then decrese at last it fall in this point where portugal lead.At last United Kingdom is one of the country which never increased the emission of carbon dioxide gas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the countries and the period, and it notices some broad movements: Sweden rises and then falls, while Italy increases. However, the overview is vague and partly inaccurate: saying some countries “remain same” does not clearly identify the main patterns, and the UK did not remain unchanged; its emissions declined steadily. Several key comparisons are missing, including that the UK stayed highest throughout, Portugal rose from the lowest level to match Sweden by 2007, and Italy became the second-highest. Some figures are also misreported: Portugal began at about 1.2 tonnes, not zero, and the UK did not “never increased” so much as decrease over the period. Select the main trends and support them with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has separate introduction, overview and detail sections, and it attempts to guide the reader with phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Furthermore.” However, the ideas are not arranged in a clear progression. The overview repeats that there are four countries without summarising their most important differences, while the body spends considerable space describing the axes and number of lines rather than comparing the data. Connections between points are sometimes unclear, as in “At last it ends between 4 to 6,” where the subject is not explicit. Organise the body around meaningful comparisons—for example, the declining UK and Sweden figures versus the rising Italian and Portuguese figures—and use clear references to each country.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

Vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on “ratio,” “shows,” “increased,” and “carbon dioxide.” Some choices make the intended meaning difficult to follow: “average of carbon dioxide emission of every single places” and “few countries low the ratio” are not natural descriptions of the graph. “Ratio” is also unsuitable for the values shown, which are emissions per person measured in tonnes. Spelling errors such as “pasage,” “incresed,” and “decrese” further reduce control. Build a small set of accurate Task 1 terms, such as “emissions per person,” “rose,” “declined,” “remained stable,” and “reached,” and use them consistently to describe trends and comparisons.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, but grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships unclear. Examples include “The graph shows the average of carbon dioxide emission,” “In this countries,” and “Portugal start with 0,” which show problems with articles, number agreement and verb forms. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also poorly controlled: the opening paragraph runs several ideas together, and spaces are often missing after commas and full stops. The sentence “At last United Kingdom is one of the country which never increased” contains several agreement and tense problems. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with clauses using “while” or “whereas”; check subject–verb agreement, articles and past-tense forms.
