IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph compares the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by each person in four countries namely( United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal ) from 1967 to 2007.
Overall,it can be seen that United Kingdom shared the greatest amount of carbon dioxide emission throughout the given peiod .While, Sweden shared the least amount allbiet, the ratio went up at the start. Although Italy and Portugal recorded the least amount of CO2 emission ,both experienced an upwardtrend across 40 years.
Regarding to United Kingdom, about 11 tones of carbon dioxde emitted by each person in the beginning of the peiod, then number then continued to decrease across the following years , until it reached about 9 in 2007.
Each citizen from Italy emiited approximately 4 tones of carbon dioxide at 1967, the number suddenly increased to about 6 after a decade, gradual increase continued untill 1997 which the number stopped at near 8 , the remained the same for the rest of the period. Similar upward trend can be noticed in Portugal. The emission started with only about 1 tone ,then gradually increased to about 6 by end of the period.
Alyhough Sweden experienced a raise to about 10 tones at the beginning of the period, a substantial decrease to less than 6 can be observed at the 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall pattern: UK emissions were highest and generally declined, while Italy and Portugal rose. The country-by-country details are mostly relevant, and the UK’s fall from about 11 to 9 and Italy’s rise to around 8 before levelling off are accurately reported. However, the overview misstates Sweden as having the least emissions throughout; Portugal was lowest at the start, and Sweden was not lowest in 1977. Portugal’s final figure is also given as about 6, whereas it was approximately 5.4, similar to Sweden. The overview would be clearer if it highlighted the changing rankings and the convergence of Sweden and Portugal. Some trends are described more fully than others, particularly Sweden’s early peak and subsequent decline.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the countries’ figures. Grouping the UK and Italy before Portugal and Sweden gives the reader a generally coherent route through the data. However, the overview’s contrast between the countries is confusing, especially the claim that Sweden was consistently lowest and the later statement that Italy and Portugal recorded the least emissions. Linking words such as “Although,” “While,” and “Similar” are used, but some connections are awkward or do not express the intended relationship clearly. For example, “Although Sweden experienced a raise…” does not establish a clear contrast. Make the overview’s comparisons precise, and use transitions to show how the countries’ trends relate rather than simply moving from one series to another.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emission,” “upward trend,” “gradual increase,” and “substantial decrease,” which helps communicate the main patterns. There is some variety in how changes are described, but several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision. “Shared the greatest amount” is not natural for emissions, and “the ratio went up” does not accurately describe the quantity shown. Spelling errors such as “peiod,” “dioxde,” “emiited,” and “Alyhough” are noticeable, while “tone” should be “tonne” in this context. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language and proofread carefully; this would make your descriptions more fluent and precise without requiring more complicated vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “about 11 tones of carbon dioxde emitted,” the sentence needs a subject and a correctly formed verb, such as “about 11 tonnes were emitted per person.” The phrase “the number then continued to decrease” is repeated and awkwardly constructed, and “until it reached about 9” needs a clearer reference to emissions. There are also punctuation and spacing problems, including missing spaces after commas and unnecessary spaces before punctuation. Check sentence completeness, articles, and clause structure, especially when combining comparisons and trends.
