Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the overall contrast between the UK’s high emissions and Portugal’s low starting point, and you note that Sweden rises to a peak before declining. These are relevant features. However, the account is only partial and some key information is inaccurate or unfinished: the UK remains highest in 2007, Italy rises and then levels off at about 7.6 tonnes, and Portugal increases steadily to about 5.4 tonnes, matching Sweden by the end. The claim that Sweden falls to 4.7 tonnes is below the chart’s approximate 5.4, while the final sentence breaks off before explaining the other countries’ trends. Include a complete overview and accurately compare the main changes across all four lines.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs attempting to describe the declining and rising trends. This gives the reader some sense of the intended organisation. However, progression is difficult to follow because the final paragraph is incomplete, and several links are awkward or unclear, such as “Overall… While” and “However” where the relationship between ideas is not fully expressed. The discussion also shifts between countries without consistently completing comparisons. Use one paragraph for the overview and organise the details into clear groups, such as the declining UK and Swedish figures versus the rising Italian and Portuguese figures. Complete each comparison and use linking words only where their meaning is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “per person,” “metric tonnes,” “decreasing trend,” and “highest point,” so the reader can generally recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the account less clear, including “Swewden,” “averagee,” “dioxie,” “down fall,” and “Purtogal.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “was on the top of average” and “it touch 4.7 metric tonnes.” Aim for accurate, conventional chart language: for example, say emissions “were highest” or “stood at” a figure, and describe a line as “fell” or “declined.” Check spellings and avoid repeating “carbon dioxide emissions” when a clear reference is possible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences and use time references to describe changes, but the range of structures is limited and errors occur frequently enough to make parts difficult to interpret. Examples include “The United Kingdom and Sweden shows,” where the plural subject needs a plural verb, and “While, the Portugal was the lower point,” which is not a complete, well-formed contrast. In “In 1967 Uk was 11 metric tonnes an Swes was on 9,” articles, punctuation, and sentence construction are also problematic. The final sentence, “it was increased 4. and,” is incomplete. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, consistent past-tense reporting, and accurate articles and agreement; then proofread each sentence for completion.
