IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrate the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, used by per individual in United Kingdom,Sweden,Italy and Portugal over a time period between 1967 to 2007.

It is clear that amount of carbon dioxide emissions per human being has decreased dramatically in United Kingdom over a time period. There is a significant increase in carbon dioxide emissions in Portugal between these years. In Italy gass CO2 is also rised between 1967 to 1997,but in last ten years it became constant. Moreover, the gass fluctuates in Sweden, initially it rised but after a little growth,it fell dramatically.

Therefore,in United Kingdom carbon dioxide emission by per folk had decreased from 11 to 9 metric tonnes.Subsequently,Portugal show a rise from 1 to 5 tonnes over a period of time. While,Italy demonstrate a growth from approximately 4 to 7.9 metric tonnes between these years. At last,Sweden illustrates a decline in the amount of gass,it decreased from 8,2 to 5 tonnes, that was a huge decline.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall patterns: emissions fall in the UK and Sweden, while Portugal rises, and Italy increases before levelling off. The overview also notes Sweden’s initial rise, which captures an important change. Your figures are broadly grounded in the graph, including the UK’s fall from about 11 to 9 and Portugal’s rise from about 1 to 5 tonnes. To make the account more complete, clarify key comparisons: the UK remains highest throughout, while Italy overtakes Sweden by 1987 and finishes second; Portugal and Sweden end at roughly the same level. Some details are imprecise, such as Italy reaching about 7.6 rather than 7.9, and the description of Sweden’s early movement is unclear. This covers the main features, but not all are developed equally precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable progression from an introduction to an overview and then a paragraph of figures. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Therefore,” and “At last” help signal movement between points. However, the organisation is not always easy to follow because several countries are discussed together without a clear comparison, and “Therefore” does not express a logical result before the figures. The sentence beginning “While, Italy…” is also a fragment, and “At last” is an awkward transition for the final data point. Grouping the countries by trend, then comparing their endpoints, would create clearer progression. Overall, the structure is coherent, but some linking is mechanical or imprecise and references such as “these years” are not always specific.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “metric tonnes,” “decreased,” “rise,” and “constant,” so the main information is generally understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “per individual” and “per human being.” However, several choices are unnatural or inaccurate for describing a graph: “emissions, used by per individual,” “by per folk,” and “the gass” do not express the intended meaning naturally. “Fluctuates” is not quite suitable for Sweden’s overall pattern, which rises and then declines. Spelling and word-form errors such as “gass” and “rised” also reduce precision. Aim for standard collocations such as “emissions per person,” “rose,” and “fell,” and use a smaller set of accurate terms rather than forced synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “but,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, some errors in agreement, articles, prepositions, and sentence construction remain. For example, “The line graph illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “over a time period between 1967 to 2007” combines prepositions incorrectly. “While, Italy demonstrate…” is not a complete sentence, and “carbon dioxide emission … had decreased” uses an unnecessary past perfect for a trend shown across the period. Commas are also often missing after introductory phrases and around clauses. Check agreement and tense, and make sure each sentence has a complete main clause; these corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
