Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the four countries and give a broad overview that the UK remains highest while Portugal starts lowest, which captures important features. However, the overview is not fully accurate for the end of the period: by 2007 Sweden and Portugal are both about 5.4 tonnes, so Portugal is no longer clearly the lowest, and Italy has risen above Sweden. Several figures are also misreported: the UK starts at about 10.8, not 10.3, and Sweden begins at about 8.6, not 8. The final comparison is incomplete, since “ITALY AND PORTUGAL increases” gives no figures or clear account of their trends. Select the main changes and support them with accurate comparisons across the whole period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the earlier years and then a final-period comparison. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression is uneven: the second paragraph ranks the countries, while the later paragraphs repeat rankings and leave the 1977–2007 account unfinished. Connectors such as “On the other hand” and “FINALLY” are used, but they do not always show a clear relationship between the information that follows. The final sentence is especially abrupt. Group the data into clear comparisons—for example, the UK and Sweden’s declines versus Italy and Portugal’s rises—and use linking phrases to make those contrasts explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “carbon dioxide,” “metric tonnes,” “rises,” and “drops,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several repeated or inaccurate expressions make the report less precise. Phrases such as “on number one,” “on top list,” and “on the least number” are not natural ways to describe rankings or values. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “emisson,” “significantaly,” and “dropes.” Use standard chart language and vary it appropriately: describe figures as “stood at,” “increased to,” or “declined to,” and use “highest” or “lowest” for rankings. This would make comparisons clearer and more formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences, such as the sentence beginning “On the other hand,” but control is inconsistent, and many sentence patterns are simple or incomplete. Errors in agreement and verb forms occur in “The graph illustrate” and “UK and SWEDEN significantaly drops.” Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “PORTUGAL is on number 4 in 1967 have roughly 1 metric tonnes,” while the final “ITALY AND PORTUGAL increases” lacks a complete, well-formed comparison. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, which further interrupts reading. Practise building accurate sentences with a subject, verb and comparison, such as “Italy rose from about 4.3 tonnes in 1967 to 7.6 tonnes in 2007.”
