Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the subject, countries and time period, and report several key trends: UK emissions decline, Sweden rises before falling, and Italy and Portugal increase. Most figures are broadly consistent with the graph. However, the response lacks a clear overview that summarises the main comparisons, such as the UK remaining highest throughout and Portugal starting lowest before reaching the same level as Sweden in 2007. Some descriptions are imprecise: the UK falls to about 8.7, not simply “around 9,” and Sweden’s 1977 peak is about 10.3 rather than 11. The task is therefore only partly addressed, with relevant but under-developed reporting. Add a concise overview and select the most important comparisons more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, then describes the UK and Sweden before moving to Italy and Portugal. Words such as “initially” and “moreover” attempt to guide the reader through the information. However, there is no distinct overview, and the progression between details is not always clear. The opening repeats the graph’s subject without establishing the main pattern, while the second paragraph combines several countries and trends in a long sequence. Some linking expressions are awkward or do not clearly show the relationship between ideas. Grouping the countries by trend—for example, declining emissions versus rising emissions—and using a separate overview would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emission,” “per person,” “metric tones,” and “gradually increases,” so the reader can generally understand the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear. For example, “most popular in releasing” does not naturally describe the highest emissions, and “discovered the most less emission” is not an appropriate way to report a low figure. “Everage” is also a spelling error, and “Colum” appears to be an incorrect word choice. Aim for precise chart language such as “recorded,” “stood at,” “peaked,” and “declined,” and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast in “Sweden … sharply increased … but suddenly decreased,” and the main trends can usually be understood. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence formation, verb forms, articles, and prepositions. For example, “in this graph demonstrate” lacks a clear subject, while “in between 1967 to 2007” uses an incorrect preposition pattern. The phrase “Italy … and than gradually increases” also shifts awkwardly between past and present tense. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including the lowercase country names and the space before the opening paragraph’s full stop. Use complete subject–verb sentences and maintain past tense when describing the historical data.
