Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad direction of several series: UK emissions decline, Sweden rises and then falls, and Italy and Portugal increase. However, the overview is incomplete and partly unclear: it does not state that the UK remains highest throughout, or that Italy overtakes Sweden and finishes second, while Portugal catches Sweden at about 5.4 tonnes in 2007. Some figures are inaccurate or too vague: Sweden starts at about 8.6, not 8, and Portugal starts at about 1.2, not 0.1; the final values of Italy and Portugal are also not clearly assigned. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the main rankings and contrasting trends, then report selected figures accurately for all four countries. The task is addressed, but key comparisons and details remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. Sequencing words such as “To begin with” and “Secondly” help signal the order of information. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the final paragraph groups Italy and Portugal together without distinguishing their figures, and the overview’s reference to Sweden’s sudden reduction is not precise about when or how much it fell. Some linking and reference choices are also awkward, such as “both trends” and “that number,” which make the relationships between ideas less clear. Organise the body by country or by contrasting trends, and use explicit comparisons to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “decline,” “metric tonnes,” and “trend,” so the subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “emissions release by person” is not a natural way to describe the measure, and “was on the peak trend” does not clearly express that the UK had the highest figure. There are also spelling errors such as “realease” and “realesed,” alongside imprecise terms such as “residence” for people. Aim for standard data-reporting phrases such as “emissions per person,” “stood at,” and “rose to,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors frequently affect clarity. Examples include “the Sweden was suddenly reduce,” where the article and verb form are incorrect, and “They were started from 4 and 0.1 tonnes,” which has an incorrect passive construction and unclear reference. Subject–verb agreement is also problematic in “no decline were noticed,” while several sentences omit necessary articles or use awkward tense patterns. Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly around the final figures. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions of chart trends, checking that each subject matches its verb and that pronouns clearly refer to the correct country or figure.
