Student answer (Band 6.0)
The supplied line chart illustrates the average carbon dioxide (co2) emissions per person across four categories , namely United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, Portugal from 1967 to 2007.
In an overview , it is clearly seen that United Kingdom was recorded highest and rapidly declined after 1977. while portugal was recorded lowest but gradually increased during the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall contrast: the UK remains the highest-emitting country, while Portugal starts lowest and rises. You also report several relevant figures and cover all four countries, so the response addresses the task. Some key features, however, are not fully or accurately presented. The UK declines gradually rather than “rapidly” after 1977, and Italy rises to about 7.6 tonnes by 1997 before remaining stable; describing it as “almost 7” understates its level. The overview would be stronger if it highlighted the countries’ different trajectories and noted that Italy overtakes Sweden. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of the end-point figures would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping the UK and Sweden separately from Italy and Portugal. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the data. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is sometimes weakened by awkward or mechanical links, such as “At first glance” and “Shifting attention towards the remaining data,” and several sentences combine multiple years without clear punctuation. The phrase “In addition” also introduces a point that is not clearly connected to the preceding comparison. Use a consistent chronological sequence, make each sentence focus on a clear comparison, and check that linking words accurately show the relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “metric tonnes,” “declined,” “increased,” and “constant,” and the reader can generally understand the trends you describe. However, the range and control of word choice are uneven. Phrases such as “was recorded highest,” “was at constant,” and “Sweden showed climaxed” are unnatural or imprecise, while “decline” is repeated frequently. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “Itlay,” “adition,” and lower-case country names. Aim for accurate collocations and a wider set of trend verbs, such as “stood at,” “peaked,” “fell,” and “levelled off.” These changes would make the report more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including contrasts with “while” and “whereas,” and the intended meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is inconsistent, and faulty sentence construction often makes the data harder to follow. For example, “In 1977 United Kingdom was constant but Sweden showed climaxed at 1977” lacks a clear grammatical structure, and “Italy and Portugal increase slightly was at…” combines incompatible verb patterns. Articles and sentence boundaries are also often missing or misplaced, as in “United Kingdom was almost at 11 metric tonnes.” Practise forming complete subject–verb clauses, maintaining past tense for the historical data, and using full stops to separate comparisons. Greater accuracy in these areas is needed alongside the range you attempt.
