IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line chart demonstrates the average emission of carbon dioxide in metric tonnes by a person in different countries such as United kingdom, Sweden, Italt and Portugal from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, the clear visibility in the fall of average carbon dioxide emission was seen in the two countries which was United kingdom and Sweden throught the years, meanwhile, the emission by other countries Italy and Portugal rose by years.
To commence with, United kingdom was releasing approximately 11 metric tonnes of CO2 in 1967, the number of emisiion was contant till 1977. Whereas, Sweden was outflowing about 9 metric tonnes of CO2 which dramatically rose to more than 10 metric tonnes in 1977. After 1977, the release of CO2 starts drastically decresing and reached at

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the overall contrast correctly: emissions fell in the UK and Sweden, while Italy and Portugal rose. The figures given for the UK and Sweden up to 1977 are also broadly consistent with the graph. However, the response ends mid-sentence at “reached at”, so the later trends are not reported, and Italy and Portugal receive no supporting figures or comparisons. The overview is therefore only partly developed, and the task is addressed minimally rather than with a complete summary of the main features. The response also contains 126 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail available. To improve, complete the account of all four countries and include the key endpoint comparison: the UK remained highest, while Italy and Portugal were both around 7.6 and 5.4 tonnes in 2007, respectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic, useful structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning “To commence with” that starts describing the data. The overview also groups the countries by whether emissions rose or fell, giving the reader a clear organising idea. However, the response stops in the middle of a sentence, so it has no completed progression through the data or concluding comparison. Some linking is awkward or unclear, particularly “Whereas” after a full sentence and “meanwhile” in the overview, where the relationships between clauses are not smoothly expressed. Develop the body in a planned sequence—for example, describe the UK and Sweden together, then Italy and Portugal—and use complete sentences with clear links between comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “average,” “metric tonnes,” “dramatically rose,” and “decreasing,” and it attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “emissions” throughout. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph: “emission by other countries … rose by years,” “outflowing” for emissions, and “clear visibility in the fall” obscure the intended meaning. Spelling errors such as “Italt,” “emisiion,” “contant,” and “decresing” also reduce precision. Aim for standard collocations such as “emissions per person,” “stood at,” and “declined,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would make the comparisons easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast between the countries and a time clause beginning “After 1977.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence patterns are faulty. For example, “the clear visibility in the fall … was seen” is an awkwardly constructed passive, while “the number of emisiion was contant” has problems with number agreement and sentence formation. In “After 1977, the release of CO2 starts … and reached at”, the tense shifts and the sentence is left incomplete. Articles and prepositions also need attention, as in “by a person” and “reached at.” Use direct, complete constructions such as “Emissions per person in the UK fell” and keep past-tense verbs consistent when describing the period.
