The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph below illustrates the four nations average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person between 1967 to 2007. Overall, it is clear that Portugal and Italy show upward trend, whereas Sweden and United kingdom had the lowest trend.

To begin with, with Portugal, in year 1967 (CO2) was about more then 1 metric ton which reach to 5 metric tonnes in year 2007. After that, for Italy it's about 4 tonnes emission in year 1967, then it rapidly increase and reach to almost 8 tonnes emission in 1997, then it remain constant for next ten years.

Turning to, Sweden the figure started at 8 tonnes emission in year 1967. It rise to 10 more next one year, then it started deciling and reach to 5 metric tonnes in year 2007. In contrast, United Kingdom declined from start to end 11 to 9 metric tonnes over a time period of 40 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the broad contrast between rising emissions in Portugal and Italy and falling emissions in Sweden and the UK, and you include several relevant start and end figures. The account of Italy’s rise and subsequent stability is also broadly accurate. However, the overview is weakened by saying Sweden and the United Kingdom “had the lowest trend”: the UK actually remained the highest-emitting country throughout, while Portugal was lowest initially. Some details are imprecise, such as Sweden rising to “10 more next one year” rather than reaching its peak in 1977, and the UK’s approximate figures are simplified. To make the report more complete, state the key ranking changes clearly, including Italy overtaking Sweden and Portugal catching Sweden by 2007.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two body paragraphs grouping the countries. Phrases such as “To begin with” and “In contrast” help signal movement between points, and the main trends can generally be followed. However, some transitions are awkward or mechanical, particularly “After that, for Italy” and “Turning to, Sweden,” and the latter punctuation interrupts the sentence. The overview’s comparison of Sweden and the UK is also unclear, which affects the logical progression of the report. Improve cohesion by grouping countries according to their trends and using direct links between comparisons—for example, noting that Italy rose as Sweden declined after 1977.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “emissions,” “metric tonnes,” “declined,” “upward trend,” and “remain constant,” so the reader can understand the main subject and changes. There is some variation in how trends are described, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “lowest trend,” “more then 1,” “10 more,” and “started deciling.” These reduce precision, especially when describing the graph’s movements. Aim for standard reporting phrases such as “stood at,” “rose to a peak of,” and “fell steadily.” Check spelling and choose words that describe the data itself rather than an unclear “trend”; this would make the vocabulary more controlled and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including clauses linked with “whereas” and “then,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, some grammatical errors remain in verb forms, articles, prepositions, and sentence construction. For example, “between 1967 to 2007” should use “between … and …,” while “it rapidly increase and reach” needs past-tense verbs (“increased” and “reached”). In “it remain constant,” the verb should also be past tense. The opening phrase “with Portugal” and the construction “in year 1967” are not grammatically well formed. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build complete sentences around each country’s figures; this will improve control without sacrificing sentence variety.
