Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad pattern that the UK and Sweden declined overall, while Italy and Portugal rose, and you include some relevant figures, such as the UK’s roughly 11 tonnes in 1967 and Italy’s increase from about 4 to 7 tonnes by 1977. However, the overview is imprecise: Italy did not rise throughout the period, as it levelled off at about 7.6 tonnes from 1997 to 2007. Some comparisons are also inaccurate or unclear. For example, Portugal rose by about 4 tonnes overall, not 2, and the UK fell by about 2 tonnes, whereas Sweden fell by nearly 5 tonnes. To strengthen the report, give a clearer overview and select accurate start-to-end comparisons, including the countries’ relative positions at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs comparing periods. Time markers such as “In 1967” and “By contrast 1977 to 2007” help the reader follow the broad sequence. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes difficult to track because several countries and trends are combined in long, loosely connected sentences. The contrast markers “One the other hand” and “By contrast” are not always used to make a clear comparison, and references such as “both country” leave it uncertain which countries are being compared. Organise the details by clearer groups—for example, rising countries versus declining countries—and use shorter sentences with explicit country names.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “line graph,” “metric ton,” “increase,” “decrease,” and “steadily,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, including “emission each person,” “significantly decrease,” and “steadily similar.” Spelling errors such as “avarage,” “dicrease,” and “deced” also make the writing less clear and reduce precision. Aim to use standard collocations for describing data, such as “emissions per person,” “rose steadily,” and “declined considerably.” Vary the verbs and nouns carefully, but prioritise accurate spelling and natural phrasing over more ambitious vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences using “while,” “and,” and “in contrast,” but these complex constructions are often faulty, and the range of sentence patterns remains limited. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in phrases such as “four country,” “Italy are slightly increase,” and “they increase last one decade.” Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “in deced 11 metric ton co2,” making the intended relationship unclear. Use a reliable pattern such as “Italy’s emissions increased from about 4 tonnes in 1967 to 6 tonnes in 1977.” Check subject–verb agreement, past-tense verbs, plural forms, and punctuation, then build longer comparisons from accurate simple clauses.
