Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the countries and give a relevant overview: the UK remains the highest emitter, while Portugal starts lowest. You also report several broadly accurate figures and trends, including the UK’s gradual decline and Sweden’s rise to a peak before falling. However, the response covers the graph only partially: the Italy description stops at “4.3 to”, and Portugal’s substantial rise is not described beyond the overview. The final comparison and end-point figures are also missing. The response contains 126 words, below the required 150, which contributes to the limited coverage. To develop the report, complete the Italy trend, describe Portugal’s increase, and compare the countries’ levels in 2007.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and the sequence broadly follows the graph’s time period. However, progression is difficult to follow because the introduction repeats the task wording, while the final paragraph combines several countries in a long, loosely connected sentence and ends abruptly. Linking is limited and sometimes unclear, as in “then the carbon dioxide is slightly decreased to 2007, In the Sweden…”. Use separate sentences or paragraphs for the main trends, and connect comparisons explicitly with phrases such as “by contrast” or “whereas”. A complete ending would also help the report feel logically finished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “average carbon dioxide emissions”, “metric tonnes”, “increased” and “decreased”, so the subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or repetitive: “countrys” is repeatedly used instead of “countries”, “mainlly higher” is unclear, and “carbon dioxide is slightly decreased” does not express the trend naturally. There are also spelling errors such as “Portgal”, “toones” and “increaded”. Aim for precise trend language and check spelling; for example, say emissions “fell gradually” or “rose steadily”. This would make the report clearer and more appropriate for describing data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, but grammatical control is inconsistent and errors often make relationships between figures difficult to follow. For example, “The line graph illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, while “United Kingdom average carbon dioxide emissions is” has problems with articles and agreement. The sentence beginning “The United Kingdom carbon dioxide emissions in 1967 is…” also shifts awkwardly between present and past forms and runs several clauses together without reliable punctuation. The final sentence is incomplete. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, use past tense consistently for the historical data, and separate each country’s trend into manageable sentences.
