Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the four countries and the overall contrast between rising emissions in Italy and Portugal and falling emissions in Sweden and the UK. The figures you give broadly match the chart, and you note that the UK remains high while Sweden and Portugal are lowest by 2007. However, the account is only partial: it omits important stages, especially Sweden’s peak in 1977 and Italy’s rise to a plateau by 1997. The overview is also repeated rather than developed, and the claim that the UK and Italy had the highest emissions in 2007 overlooks that the UK alone was highest. Select the main turning points and make the end-of-period comparison more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction to a summary of trends and then a concluding statement. Contrast markers such as “On the other hand” help signal comparisons. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph largely repeats the preceding claims instead of adding a distinct overview. Several links are awkward or inaccurate, including “Moreover that,” and the trend information is compressed into one long paragraph, making comparisons harder to follow. Organise the body by grouping the two rising countries and the two declining countries, then use a concise overview to highlight the main pattern and final rankings. This would make the sequence clearer and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “emissions,” “per person,” “metric tonnes,” and “significant,” so the reader can understand the subject and broad trends. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “increament,” “decrement,” and “Coversely.” “Carbon dioxide emissions” is repeated frequently, and phrases such as “the graph demonstrate” and “had highest” show weak control of natural collocations and forms. Use a wider set of accurate trend verbs and comparison phrases, such as “rose,” “declined,” “peaked,” and “remained stable,” while avoiding unnecessary repetition. Careful spelling checks would also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, and the main message is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “the graph demonstrate” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “there was significant increament” is missing an article in its structure. The sentence beginning “Moreover that” is not grammatically formed, and “the United Kingdom have highest” contains agreement and article errors. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with a missing space after a full stop. Practise accurate sentence patterns for describing trends, checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries before adding more complex clauses.
